X ABSTEACT This research is a dissertation for the roaster degree. The aim of this researc is to study the small town Borçka from a geographical viewpoint Our research area is located in the borders of Eastern Karadeniz Section- of Karadeniz region. We have restricted our research area to Borçka town itself. Administratively it is dependent on Artvin province and is about 33 km. away from that city. The measure of land of the town is 14.8 square kilometers. To the north for Borçka there is Aralık and Örücüler villages, to the east Arkaköy, to the south Ambarlı and Civanköy and to the west Ormeli. Relief of the area generally consists of the valleys formed by Çorah river and its branches and hilly lands around them. According to the 26 year £1854-1980} observations of Borçka Meteorological Office, the average precipitation is about 1258 mm. Its climate is moderate with permanent precipitation, relative humidity, and low temperatures in winter. In the area, Çoruh is the langest river which Sows in south-north direction. The average flow rate is 185 m^'/sec. Borçka is often covered with rich forests. History of settlement of Borçka goes back to B.C. years. în 1S85 its population was 6543. Them town is settled by Çoruh river. Majority of the townspeople earn their living from services (37 % ) and agriculture (34 %}. The welfare level of the population is rather higher than its neighbour towns. This is due to the fact that tht town is on the transit road between Artvin and Hopa, that in 1952 tea agriculture was started in the town and that a timber factory was founded in the same year. More recently, the border trade with Soviet Union has been started which has resulted in a more vivid economic life in Borçka.
