Özet

After World War II, automobile use expanded rapidly in the developed countries. Asa result, travel pattern changed entirely and automobile has become the dominantform of transport in cities. As a result, the city has been shaped and sized in responseto automobile needs. Such increase caused traffic problems in the Central BusinessDistricts and surrounding areas. The problems of traffic congestion and pedestriancirculation have become an important issue in the whole city. As traffic problemshave grown in developed cities, they had to be engaged in managing travel demandof people in order to provide mobility and access with reference to the advancingprinciples of sustainability. In this scope, this study shows the need of travel demandmanagement to create a sustainable transport system. As a case, this study willevaluate the transport problems of Ankara and the place of the city in the urbantransport policy process. At this point, transport problems and the transformation ofroad network and their impacts on the city will be examined in four periods. As aconclusion, urban transportation strategies needed for creating a sustainable transportsystem are overviewed for the city of Ankara.iv
