SUMMARY Psoriasis is a common, chronic and inflammatory disease. The etiology of the disease in unknown. In recent years the alterations in arachidonic acid metabolism is thought to be one of the factors that causes psoriasis. Photochemotherapy is a current therapy method for psoriasis which is used successfully. In this study the effects of photochemotherapy on arachidonic acid metabolism was investigated. For this purpose 20 patients with active psoriasis vulgaris PUVA treatment were examined in Erciyes University Department of Dermatology, PUVA treatment unit. Among the patients 10 were female, 10 were male, and their ages were between 18-55 years. A total of 4 biopsies were taken both from the psoriatic lesion and the normal skin of each patient before and after PUVA treatment. The leukotriene B4 and prostaglandin E2 levels were determined on the biopsies by bioassay method in Gazi University, Department of Pharmacology.47 The pretreatment levels of LTB4 were higher in psoriatic lesion than normal skin and the results were meaningful statically. After the treatment the levels of LTB4 of both areas were decreased and this result was meaningful statically also. But the differences between the values of two areas were not meaningful after treatment. In conclusion it may be suggested that one of the effects of PUVA treatment on psoriatic lesion is to alter lipooxygenase way and thus to reduce the LTB4 levels. Both pretreatment and after treatment PGEj levels were higher in normal skin than psoriatic lesions and the results were meaningful statically. However the results obtai ned on psoriatic lesions and normal skin before and after treatment did not differ signi ficantly when assessed. In conclusion it may be suggested that PUVA treatment on psoriatic lesion did not effect the POBj levels.
