Özet (Çeviri)

This dissertation constitutes a comparative analysis of the Seljukid courtyards by analysing the typological roots and constructing parallels to the cultural identity of the Seljuks. The analysis starts by accentuating the courtyard theme within the perspective of identity into the context of culture as a human architectural intervention with nature.“Emptiness”as the natural habitat displays the initial point of the research and the centre of the courtyard. Additional to this perspective this scientific work aims to reanimate and enrich the courtyard topic by the terminology of an occurring interdisciplinary field, architecture psychology. The reasons for this lie in the common focus on the dialectic relations of human and environment as well as in the multi layered interest of this new discipline for“identity”. The second chapter, after having started with the emptiness and the human intervention as identifying a piece of emptiness after occupation, deals with the urbanization issue of the Seljuks by using the example of the nomadic Seljuks and their yurt. The third chapter deals with the issue as to how the development of the Turkish Islamic identity and political power of the Seljuks influenced the architectural examples gaining on complexity and representation. Base on the necessity of monumentality, the implementation of the royal four-eyvan-scheme to the mosques is explained in the fourth chapter. This new four eyvan mosque scheme developed by the Seljuks became the mosque prototype for centuries in Persia, Transoxania and Central Asia. But the new political circumstance in Anatolia and the difficulties of stabilizing the rule in the 12th century influenced also the development of Seljukid architecture in Asia Minor. The missing central authority caused the appearance of regional principalities. The different architectural achievements shown in the fifth chapter depended on the cultural and financial capacities of those principalities. However, according to the established foundation and service culture prosperous architectural examples like caravanserais, hospitals and madrasas were built. The ideologies of the rulers and the available masters determined the different types of buildings. Grandiose masterpieces in Konya, Divrigi, Erzurum and Sivas survived until our time. The stabilization of the political power in the 13th century is reflected on the architecture, for example in the Sultan Hans, which built a series of similar types and qualities.Another important issue which this dissertation reveals is that in Anatolia in the different regions, the central courtyard was roofed without changing the Asian central plan scheme. This issue displays the meta-climatic and morphological dimension of the topic and the relevance of emptiness within the central plan scheme. The monumentality of the buildings in Anatolia has been represented with the highly sophisticated ornamentation which arrives in Divrigi first-grade sculpting dimensions. It is important to mention that while describing the Seljukid examples, the enrichment of the courtyard terminology has been aspired. The suggestions of new categorisations for the eyvans and vocabulary for different courtyards complete the work.
