Seismic activity of the world is increasing dramatically and very huge earthquakes have been occurred in the last 20 years in different parts of the world, like Indian Ocean Earthquake in 2004 (9.15 (Mw)) and Tohoku earthquake in 2011 (magnitude 9.0 (Mw)). The study focuses on the effects of a seismic action to curtain walls and design considerations for façades of the buildings that are located in seismic regions. It is very important to understand the behavior of primary structure during an earthquake, in order to design the curtain walls correctly, especially for seismic regions where earthquakes are occurred more often and repetitive, like JAPAN, USA etc. Thence, the work includes the theoretical explanations with illustrations in this respect and an example of seismic analysis for a high-rise building which was built in Istanbul city between 2012 and 2014. Related international regulations have similar approaches to seismic design criteria of curtain walls, even if some of them focus on deformed shape of the building, its effects to non-structural elements more and provide related design parameters more detailed. All regulations and codes that are included in this work have a limitation for relative displacement between adjacent stories. This is the main criterion for façade design of which effects to curtain walls are mainly investigated in the paper. The study also includes general evaluation for the existing standard curtain wall systems, in terms of their reaction to deformed shape of the primary structure caused by a seismic action. Finally, the study offer a new kind of system suggestion for the curtain walls that are attached to buildings which are located seismic zones. The aimed function of the suggested system is to tolerate high story drift motions without any permanent damage. That is why, the system consists of flexible fastening and connection parts and a custom design glass unit.
