Various findings proposed that emotion-regulation goals have an important role in controlling the direction of emotion regulation (Millgram, Joormann, Huppert & Tamir, 2015), and that emotional information leads biased attention (Vuilleumier & Huang, 2009). In this study, we examined whether people automatically attend to negative information, do task-oriented, or emotion-oriented goals have an impact on this process, and whether this is moderated by emotion regulation skills, anxiety and depression. The sample of 151 participants (Mage = 20.84, SDage = 3.27) was recruited from the University of Reading. The dot-probe task was used to test whether individuals can use goal-directed attention on emotional stimuli. In the attention task, three different cue combinations were used: negative versus neutral, negative versus positive, and positive versus negative. To investigate the link between emotion regulation, attentional bias, and depression and anxiety, we also used several questionnaires. We found that in positive vs. negative trials, depressed people attend to positive information, and anxious people showed tendencies to attend to negative information. For the rest, we found that people attend away from the emotional information already in the baseline phase, and they enhance this strategy by getting faster.
