In recent years, identity politics has come to the forefront in political debates on immigration, settlement and integration of minorities in France. Modern French national identity is based on the values of the French Revolution and the Enlightenment. France, however, has been going through a socıal transformation since 1945 with increasing cultural diversity within its borders. This study addresses the question of identity. The problem of integration in France is a problem of identity, Efforts to maintain a strong French national identity have signifıcant implications for the immigrant and minority groups. This paper argues that Jacobın Republicanism in France does not accommodate cultural pluralism. The paper examines the roots of the modern French national identity, the recent challenges it faces such as the mass non-European immigration, the policies and politics of immigration and integration, the French citizenship laws, and the socio-cultural and economic alienation minorities experience today, The paper also analyses the links between the development and the protection of the French identity and the emergence of problems of integration for minority groups.
