Previously, countries in the Middle East have demonstrated in demand for social justice, dignity, freedom, economic equality, and human rights. Present conditions in the Middle East have had more influence on strengthening authoritarian regimes at the expense of democracy. For an extended period, the majority of countries located in the Middle East region have been ruled by authoritarian and dictatorial regimes. These regimes apply different measures to stabilize their rule and governance. The opposition has been deactivated through divide-rule concepts and election engineering, as summarized in this thesis. Besides, reliable coercive apparatuses are used to maintain rule over the opposition. The authoritarian regimes also continue to take root in the region as most countries attempt to form resistance to the process of democratization. Different approaches by several scholars have also highlighted the plight of the entire Middle East region. This paper analyzes the reasons behind such stable authoritarian rule in the region, delving into several responses by different authors and scholars that attempt to evaluate this complex scenario. Most posited arguments focus on institutional, cultural, and economic necessities for the change from authoritarian rule to democratization. Again, most of the raised arguments in this paper view democratization as a contingent alternative that occurs under various cultural and socio-economic conditions. All arguments have their validity but bear a limitation in explaining the complicated architecture across the Middle East region. Despite the challenges in attaining democratic ideologies, this thesis concludes with several recommendations that can be applied to achieve democratization in the Middle East region.
