Today, in a rapidly evolving technological landscape, numerous fields ranging from heavy industrial manufacturing systems to modern electrified transportation technologies demand highly advanced, robust, and power-dense actuator solutions. In this context, the stringent requirements for high electromechanical efficiency, superior power density, and highly precise speed and torque control have come to the forefront of both academic and industrial research. Especially in the burgeoning and highly competitive sector of light electric vehicle (LEV) technologies such as e-bikes, electric scooters, compact urban transit vehicles, and automated guided vehicles (AGVs) the dynamic performance of actuator systems plays a fundamentally critical role. It directly dictates the enhancement of driving comfort, the extension of the effective driving range under limited battery capacities, and the overall optimization of energy consumption. Brushless direct current (BLDC) motors are frequently preferred in these specific applications due to their exceptional torque-to-inertia ratios, long operational lifespans with minimal maintenance needs, high reliability, and superior dynamic characteristics under varying load profiles. However, for these advanced motors to operate at their absolute peak capacity, the associated power electronic drive hardware, power modulation techniques, and rotor position sensing strategies must be co-designed within a highly integrated and optimized architecture. This synergistic design approach is essential for targeting and achieving the theoretical limits of high efficiency and maximum power density. Traditionally, controlling BLDC motors requires precise and continuous knowledge of the rotor position, which is typically acquired using physical position sensors such as Hall-effect sensors, resolvers, or high-resolution optical encoders. However, the incorporation of these physical sensors in compact drive architectures inevitably brings about significant structural, economic, and operational disadvantages. These include supplementary hardware costs that affect mass production, an undesirable increase in the overall system volume and weight, severe wiring complexity that complicates the manufacturing and assembly process, and a notable sensitivity to environmental disturbances. In the harsh operating environments typical of electric vehicles—characterized by extreme temperature fluctuations, high levels of electromagnetic interference (EMI), moisture, dust, and continuous mechanical vibrations—sensor failures are widely recognized as a primary cause of catastrophic system breakdown. Considering these critical drawbacks, robust and innovative sensorless approaches have been developed and comprehensively analyzed in this thesis as superior alternatives to traditional sensor-based driving methods. Specifically, three distinct driving methodologies were theoretically structured and investigated. The first is the conventional sensor-based Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) method. The second is a sensorless Pulse Amplitude Modulation (PAM) technique, which uniquely identifies the zero-crossing points of the induced back-electromotive force (back-EMF) by evaluating the differences in line voltages. The third approach is an advanced, observer-based sensorless Space Vector Pulse Width Modulation (SVPWM). This highly sophisticated tracking observer methodology is systematically constructed upon a voltage model for precise stator flux estimation, followed by rotor flux isolation, the calculation of normalized phase errors, and ultimately the integration of a Phase-Locked Loop (PLL) mechanism for continuous, accurate speed and angle estimation. To rigorously verify, validate, and benchmark these developed control strategies prior to the expensive and time-consuming physical prototyping phase, highly detailed and realistic simulation models were meticulously created within the MATLAB & Simulink environment. The system architecture was methodically divided into open-loop and closed-loop simulation models for the designated driving techniques. Within these virtual environments, a critical emphasis was placed on accurate thermal and electrical representations, specifically through the detailed mathematical modeling of MOSFET switching phenomena, which strictly bifurcated into conduction and switching losses. By implementing these models, the primary aim was twofold: first, to substantially increase the hardware reliability and fault-tolerance of the drive system by validating the elimination of fragile mechanical sensors, and second, to systematically calculate power losses using the extensive simulation toolsets. Furthermore, during the intricate design and tuning process of the closed-loop control models, the PI controller coefficients were rigorously optimized using advanced, nature-inspired genetic algorithms. This intelligent and autonomous tuning approach guaranteed robust system stability, rapid transient response, and optimal dynamic tracking performance across a wide operating envelope. Beyond mere control parameter optimization, the study took a holistic and deeply integrated approach to hardware design. Comprehensive, real-world databases were systematically established for critical inverter components. These encompassed a dedicated MOSFET database, an inductor core database formulated through precise inductance calculations, and a capacitor database strictly based on required capacitance evaluations. Utilizing this extensive empirical dataset, a fundamental system-level algorithm was developed to execute a multi-objective switching frequency optimization. This algorithm successfully navigates the complex and often conflicting trade-offs inherent in power electronics engineering, aiming to simultaneously minimize the system's total power losses, physical footprint (volume), and overall financial cost requirements across the PWM, PAM, and SVPWM architectures. The subsequent comparative analysis rigorously evaluated the optimized driving methods by dividing the ultimate assessment into two distinct categories: physical system analysis and dynamic control performance analysis. Special attention was dedicated to highly critical system parameters such as steady-state speed tracking stability, the suppression of high-frequency oscillations, and the mitigation of electromagnetic torque ripple, which directly affects mechanical resonance, acoustic noise emission, and accelerated wear in the drivetrain. Alongside these dynamic evaluations, the impact of each driving strategy on the Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) levels was thoroughly investigated to assess the resulting power quality and electromagnetic footprint. Ultimately, this comprehensive evaluation framework illuminates the multidimensional trade-offs inherent in modern electrical drive design. By juxtaposing the demand for high electromechanical efficiency and low harmonic distortion against stringent volume constraints, economic viability, and varying degrees of algorithmic control complexity, this study provides a robust, criteria-based roadmap. This roadmap serves as a definitive guide for analyzing and selecting the most appropriate modulation and control strategy tailored to specific industrial and academic application requirements, paving the way for future high-performance BLDC drive developments.
