60 SUMMARY Efficacy of Saccharomyces Boulardii One of The Probiotics, In The Dogs With Antibiotic Induced Diarrhea In this study it was aimed to investigate the efficacy of S. boulardii in dogs with antibiotic induced diarrhea. Antibiotics are causing diarrhea by detonating normal bowel flora and grow up the some pathogen microorganisms or destroying the transforme of carbonhydrates to low chain fatty acids and absorbtion. One of the treatment choices of antibiotic induced diarrhea is use of probiotics. Saccharomyces boulardii have been used much for this purpose. In this study dogs divided in three groups each containing eight dogs. First group used as control second and third groups are used as experimental groups. Only lincomycin was applied to first group. In the second group S. boulardii was given following lincomycin application. In the third group lincomycin and S. boulardii was applied together. 13 of 16 dogs developed diarrhea in the first (n=6) and second (n=7) group. Diarrhea started at 7.8±1,6 days in group first and 6.9±2 days in group second. Cessation of diarrhea was 6.5±1.2 days in group first, and 2.9±0.4 days in group second (psO.05). Gaita Cultures did not revealed any pathogen microorganisms in dogs with antibiotic induced diarrhea. When of short chain fatty acid total amounts compared between the group 1 and group 2 before (p=0 878) the study and and when the diarrhea started (p=0.336) no statistically significance detected however when the diarrhea ceased (psO.05) and after 1 week of cessation (pfi0.05) statistically significance detected. In the 3rd group at days 5., 8., and 10. the total amounts of short chain fatty acids were not as low as in 1st and 2nd group the diarrhea started, and in this group no dogs developed diarrhea. In conclusion the efficacy of S. boulardii on pathogens microorganisms could not be investigated in dogs with antibiotic induced diarrhea because the cultures did not reveal any microorganisms but S. boulardii was found to be effective in both protective and both therapeutic in antibiotic induced diarrhea developed by carbonhydrate metabolism disorders.
