176 RESEARCHES ON THE SEED CROPf. OF SCOTS PINE ( Pji»u,s silyestris- L.) IN ESKİŞEHİR - ÇATACIK FOREST REGION Summary The study- area. Scots pine which occupies extensive ^e,eem*±n-!Evirope and northern Asia has a great economi c importance. Southern boundary of its geographical distribution lies in Turkey along Kayseri - Pxnarbasi direction at 38°ifi«N latitude. The Çatacak region on Sündiken mountains where the study area is Located (39°57'N latitude).may also be considered as one of the deepest boundaries down in the south in northern hemisphere, Scots pines in this region have narrow and conical crowns with tall and straight stems, and slender and handsome appearance having a good quality/ of wood. The study area was located on the northern slopes of the Sündiken mountains. Fairly deep and coarse textured soils which are generally deH'.V<&otd from the.v'^. metamorphic (micaschist)parent materials and have a good drainage characteristics through the soil profile, in this region. According to the thornthwaite. s classification, Catacxk (1550 m) has a ^fJ*H- o*»». f ^^^e^i^G^^y^. '-??-:?.: :?.:?-..:::% There were important vegetative differences between northern and southern general aspects of Sündiken mountain range. Scots pine occupies large areas between 1200 m and l800 m elevations on the northern slopes of Sündikens in Catacxk >" region. At lower elevations between 750 m and 1200 m a belt of Austrian pines and between 390 m and 750 m, patches of Pinus brutia take place. Between these belts there are mixed standa of these species and their vertical limits vary ' considerably according to different exposures. Relative amount of Austrian pines in Scots pine stands generally increase eastwards, and it dominates on the northern exposure autside of study area. On the other hand, on the southern general aspects of Sündikens, Austrian pines become a dominating species. Scots pines take place only on the higher peaks of the mountains. Quercus sp,,Juniperus sp. and Populus tremula are also mixing with Austrian pine on northern slopes. In general the height of these species decrease in accordance with the lower - elevations. In natural steppic areas between 85O and 900 m elevations occasional Austrian pine. Juniperus sp;-and Quercus spj-take place.
