The efforts to reduce the fuel consumption and exhaust emissions in the internal combustion engines is the starting point of the investigations on the engines working with dual fuels. In this study, influence of injection timing on the engine performance and exhaust emissions of a single cylinder, four stroke, naturally aspirated diesel engine has been experimentally investigated when using methanol blended diesel fuel from 0 to 15% with an increment of 5%. Standard injection timing of the test engine used in the experimental study is 20o before top dead center (BTDC) in terms of crank angle. Experiments were done in four different loads and three different values of advanced injection timing (15o, 20o, 25o) by changing advance shims which were located in the connection place between engine and fuel pump. Experiments were conducted at variable engine loads (5-10-15-20 Nm) and constant speed (2200 rpm). A mixer was mounted inside the fuel tank in order to prevent phase-separation. According to the experimental results, advancing the injection timing, increasing the engine load and methanol ratio in the mixture have caused to increase in the brake specific fuel consumption and NOx emissions and to decrease in the brake thermal efficiency, CO and HC emissions. With the retarded injection timing, while the brake specific fuel consumption, CO and HC emissions have increased, brake thermal efficiency and NOx emissions have diminished
