Özet
Antik dönemden beri varlığı bilinen Galata, Ortaçağdan itibaren Bizans, Ceneviz ve fetihten sonra da bir Türk yerleşim karakteri kazanmış ve bütün bu süreç içinde önemli bir ticaret merkezi olma özelliğini korumuştur. Bölgenin tarihi katmanlarını oluşturan bu üç dönem boyunca Galata'nın fiziksel kent karakteristiğinin tanımlanmasındaki en önemli faktörlerden biri Galata surları olmuş ve buraya bir ?sur içi kent? dokusu niteliği kazandırmıştır.Ortaçağ yapım gelenekleri doğrultusunda, ilk inşa tarihinden itibaren Galata surları zamanla genişlemiş ve İstanbul'un fethinden önce son şeklini almıştır. Türk döneminde de bakım ve onarımına özen gösterilmesine rağmen fonksiyonunu yitirdiği için surlar, 18. yüzyıldan sonra bakımsızlaşmış ve 19.yüzyılın ikinci yarısında ise dönemin imar politikaları doğrultusunda Osmanlı İmparatorluğu'nun ilk belediye örgütü tarafından peyderpey yıkılmıştır. Bu çalışma, Galata kent dokusu içinde azda olsa günümüze ulaşabilmiş sur parçalarından yola çıkarak, sur güzergâhını ve bu yapının kent topografyası üzerinde nasıl bir mimari gramer ortaya koyduğunu tespit etmek amacıyla ele alınmıştır.Galata'nın tarihçesinin ele alındığı ikinci bölümde Antik dönemden itibaren sırasıyla, Ortaçağ'da ve Türk döneminde; 16., 17. ve 18. yüzyıllarda bölgenin kentsel görünüşünün evrimi incelenmiş ve değişimin surlara nasıl yansıdığı sorusuna cevap aranmıştır. Ayrıca Ortaçağ'da buraya tipik bir Akdeniz İtalyan kenti dokusu kazandıran Cenevizlerin yaklaşık 200 yıllık iktidarları sürecinde Galata'daki imar faaliyetleri, onların Bizans İmparatorluğu ve Osmanlı Beyliği ile sürdürdüğü politik ilişkiler çerçevesinde ele alınmıştır. İkinci bölüm bölgenin 19. yüzyılda geçirdiği kentsel transformasyondan sonra surların yıkılması sürecinin ele alınmasıyla nihayetlenmiştir.Üçüncü bölümde Galata surları ve yerleşiminin, mimari, teknik, kentsel özellikleri incelenmiştir. Bu amaçla yerleşimin topografik özellikleri, surların bölge ölçeğindeki planı, bugünkü durumu, güzergâhı ve birimleri ile bunların fonksiyonları ayrı ayrı ele alınarak Galata surlarının ortaya koyduğu mimari prensipler çözümlenmeye çalışılmıştır.Sonuç bölümünde bölgenin sosyal ve fiziksel tarihi ile surların mimari ve teknik detaylarına ilişkin varılan tespitler ışığında Galata surlarının günümüz kent dokusundaki güzergâhı, mimari ve fonksiyonel özelliklerine ilişkin sonuçlara varılmıştır.

Galata, which its existence was known from the ancient period, had adopted the characteristic of Byzantine and Genovese from the middle ages and a Turkish settlement after the conquest and it had been maintained to be one of the most important trade center during all these centuries/processes. Genovese Walls had been the most important factor to describe the Galata?s physical urban characteristic during these three periods which formed the region?s historical layers and acquired the region a fabric of the fortified city.According to the construction techniques of the middle ages, Genovese Walls had been expanded in the time of events since they were built and had adopted their final shape just before the conquest. In spite of paying atttention to their restoration and maintainance, during the Turkish period the walls had been lost their functions so that they became neglected and were demolished gradually according to the politics of the Ottoman Empire?s first municipal organization. This thesis is try to ascertain and examine the outline of the walls and that how the walls put forward an architectural grammar in the urban landscape according to the remnants of the city walls which can be seen and recognized in today?s urban tissue.In the second part of the thesis which discusses the history of Galata, evolution of the region?s appearance has been examined in chronological order from the Ancient time to the middle ages and Turkish period which is 16th, 17th and 18th centuries and try to answer the question of how the changes were reflected in the Genovese walls. Genovese, who acquired the region a typical mediterranean Italian city characteristic in the middle ages, reconstruction activities throughout 200 years when they were in power in Galata, handled with consideration of the Genovese political relation with Byzantine and Ottoman Empire. Second part is finalized with the examination of the demolishment of the Genovese walls after the region underwent an urban transformation in 19th century and urban planning examples which affected the region.At the third part Genovese walls and settlement are analysed with their architectural, technical and urban characteristics. For that purpose the settlement?s landscape features, walls plan according to the regional scale, their state in present day, their outline, their features and their functions are handled separately in order to understand the architectural principals that Genovese walls were manifested.At the final part it is reached the conclusions about the outline of the Genovese walls in today?s urban tissue, their architectural and functional features in the light of the designations according to the region?s social and physical history and the architectural and technical details of the walls.
