Piesma maculatum Laporte (Het.:Piesmidae) have caused damages on su~rbeet plants in- Oltu(Erzurum) and its vicinty since 1918. However, no study has been done so far on this pest in Turkey. Morphological and biological studies were conducted'in 1988 and 1989 both in the field and laboratory cQnditions. Adult, egg and nymphal stages of ~. macula tum were examined under microscope and body parts having taxonomic importance were drawed. The adults began to appear in the sugar beet fields on May 20 in 1988 and on May 10 in 1989. The females started to deposite eggs on June 29 in 1988 and on May 18 in 1989. Eggs were laid on both upper and lower surfaces of sugar beet leaves and petioles. A female laid 15-105 eggs in her life. Adults of the frist generation began to occur on July 15 in 1988 and on June 20 in 1989. The adults overwintered under dried plant materials, stones, trees and bushes and in crevices of soil near or in the fields. It gaved one genaration in 1988 bllt two genarations in 1989, because of the climatical conditions. The last year tempareture was higher and drier than first year. Nymphs and adults of ~. maculatum feed on petioles and both sides of the leaves of sugar beet plants. Leaves sucked by these insect after 5 days become light colored, circular feeding flecks appeared, curled and completely deformed, then dried in a few weeks. The seedlings and young sugar beet plante were very susceptible to feeding of the insect, while the growed plants more- tolerant. It has been found that ~.maculatum feeds on ~ lomatogona Fish. et Mey. which is common weed in uncultivated area near sugar beet fields.maculatum was found only in Oltu, Narman,Şenkaya and one willage of Olur cultivating sugar beet. The other towns of Erzurum planting sugar beet had not been infected yet. population of the ~nsect higher in Oltu than that of Narman and Şenkaya'.
