Özet (Çeviri)

This work is an attempt to discuss Wittgenstein's philosophy in a way which brings -together issues in Philosophy of Mind and in Philosophy of Religion. The ultimate aim is to show that the Cartesian dualistic picture of the self, not only is not necessary to religion, but that it, furthermore, gravely distorts philosophical accounts of religious life. In order to do this, the Cartesian idea of thought and language as mental occurrences is discussed and shown to give rise to the central dualist conception of a private inner self. Then an attempt is made to highlight the applications of such a conception to religious life. Saint Anselm's Ontological Argument for the Existence of God as well as Sir J.Frazer's Golden Bough are offered as examples of a mentalist view at work in much Philosophy of Religion. Following this, Wittgenstein's distinction between picture and representation is presented. It is suggested that this distinction can be useful towards shaping an anti- Cartesian, anti-mentalist framework within which to discuss important issues in Philosophy of Religion. One of the issues approached within such a perspective is that of prayer and superstition. Again, the claim is that Cartesianism cannot uphold the religious authenticity of prayer and that it fails to discern the distinctive grammar of superstition. Finally the concept of the soul is discussed. A brief historical exploration shows that this concept has been overwhelmed by dualist metaphysics, most clearly articulated by Descartes. It is then argued that the dualistic conception of the soul cannot do justice to any of the claims that the soul represents, notably among them those of spirituality and eternal life.
