Sport has been an important feature of human life. Records showed us that the Ancient Olympics had all the elements of modern professional sports: competitors, trainers, referees, spectators and vendors. In addition to those today we also have sports goods manufacturers and a whole media. Millions of people either are professional athletes or work in sports related jobs. Such a phenomenon must have a tremendous affect on the society. The benefits of amateur sports are more or less obvious; so are the economic benefits of professional sports. On the other hand, the social benefits of professional sports, furthermore, the benefits of broadcasting such professional events harder to prove. In this dissertation we initially tried to show that professional sports and their unobstructed broadcast is in public interest. Since a formal proof would not be possible, we tried to find mechanisms that either shows benefits to the society or without them society would lose. Such benefits and losses make up the rationale why one should intervene in a market event. Secondly we looked into the mechanisms of broadcasting of sport events and the distribution of rights. Although there are country variations, we found that the current markets can be modeled with dual-layered monopolistic behavior. Such monopolies are most undesirable as they cause the consumer prices marked-up twice. It has been widely accepted that one of the monopolies, the collective selling by federations and associations, is necessary for the sustenance of sports therefore should exist. View therefore, we accepted this view and concentrated only one of the monopolists. Finally we took the case of Turkey where such monopolies exist in the extreme, and tried to develop a model that market can be re-organised so as to remove one of the monopolies. This of course would be possible by the advent of new technologies which in the first place made sport broadcasting and pay-TV possible.
