The genetic code of a city consists of three different elements; Built-up environment which functions as a main core containing housing, industrial, trading..etc. , infrastructure; connector of main islands in those built-up environment and open spaces that resembles the greenery and empty places in urban context. Open spaces can be classifed as public spaces , shared spaces and urban voids. Public spaces such as urban parks and shared spaces are the elements of this genetic element that provide green void to the urban organism. These places symbolize people's desires, recreational activities and communication tools for inhabitants. However, some cities are having a problem of meaningless spaces on their urban systems due to migration and other social facts depending on the identity of the area so called urban voids. Urban voids are considered as dangerous areas that is resulting from faulty planning process. It can be said that they behave like bacteria or a gene that contains an error in a living organism. On the other point of view these spaces are the only elements that can change or mutate rapidly grown cities. Therefore, these spaces are considered as places needed to be rethought, redesigned and reinvented. This research paper examines the urban voids in Santa Coloma de Gramenet, Barcelona and provides a question how to transform, rehabilitate these spaces into sustainable urban tissue. In order to find a solution to the questionnarie, the research ends with three different interpretation of voids such as Filling the Void, Feeling the Void and Filtering the Void , each one includes different approaches in Europe and United States, applied to Sta Coloma.
