Due to global concern about increasing GHG emissions and the resulting consequences on the environment, the majority of industrialised countries have ratified the Kyoto Protocol. The aim of this protocol is to reduce the GHG emissions by meeting the emissions targets agreed by the Annex 1 Member States. Germany is one of these countries and is following ambitious targets to fulfil its part of the agreement. However, these targets are not achievable without the participation of the large-scale energy user, namely the industrial sector. The aim of the present dissertation is to analyse the prevailing situation of energy saving measures in Germany´s steel construction SMEs due to the high energy demand of this sector. In order to achieve this research aim, the following three research objectives are investigated: (1) What kind of measures have been implemented within companies to save energy? (2) What are the determining factors of these measures? and (3) What are the benefits resulting from these measures? By applying a quantitative-qualitative combined research method, it is revealed that the characteristics of SMEs have a huge influence on the companies. Most of the research participants prefer to implement simple and costeffective measures, are driven by rising energy prices and possible cost reductions, while financial issues, uncertainty about the future development in energy markets and a lack of time aggravate the implementation of energy saving measures. Regarding the benefits, all of the companies report achieved or expected cost reductions, while some companies have been able to realise further benefits.
