This dissertation investigates the understudied aspects of online identity theft by focusing on the explanatory factors related to this crime and the effect of fear of identity theft on individuals' online and offline preventive measures. Although there are numerous online victimization studies, the factors which explain online identity theft remain unexplored. This study analyzes the dataset of Crime Survey England and Wales (2014-2015) by applying the Routine Activities Theory as its theoretical framework. Binary logistic regression analyses reveal that some of the online activities and electronic devices used to access the internet are related to a heightened risk of victimization. The analyses suggest that computer virus/infection is an important precursor to online identity theft. Offline behaviors and victimizations appear not to be associated with victimization. Results also indicate that fear of identity theft led to higher levels of online and offline guardianship. This study contributes to the knowledge of online identity theft and to the policies and practices of law enforcement bodies, decision makers and internet users.
