MARJANI AND HIS MUSTEFAD UL-AKHBAR ABSTRAKT EDITED BY: Osman KEMER ADVISER: Prof. Dr. Sabri HİZMETLİ Marj ani was born on the 3 January 1818 in the village Yapancy near Qazan. Marjani first studied in his father's medresseh, later graduated from Medressehs of Bukhara and Samarkand. Back in Qazan in 1849 he founded his own medresseh. Marjani was a uniersal scholar a historian and theologian. Marjani died on the 18 April 1889 in Qazan. Marjani was a typical repressentative of the pleiad of Muslim reformes who, from middle of the 19 th century and to its end endeaovured to arouse“Daru'l-Islam”from its long slumber so that if might face the challenge of the West. One of the important works Mustefadu'l-Akhbar fi Akhval-i Qazan ve Bulghar, a history of the Tatars in two volumes, the first published in Qazan in 1885 and the second in the same city in 1900. Our study consists of an introduction and two major chapters. In the introduction the cultural aspects of the 19 th century (the time of Marjani) is beriefly portrayed and the political, social, economic and scientific activities in this century are summarized with the most essential features. In the first chapter Marjani's life, his works and career as a scholar are discussed. In this context, his personality and a brief account of lives and works of his students are also given. In the second chapter we dealt with the sources of Mustefadu'l-Akhbar. These main sources are evaluted within the context of such Islamic sciences as Qoran, Hadith, History, Language etc. All of these are analyzed and studied in relation to Miistefadu'l-Akbar.
