SUMMARY The act of Garip, foims the part of striving novelty in poetiy which was started by Nâzım Hikmet and Ercümend behzad towards the end of 20's in the of Republic. In other words, at the begining of the act, there was an opposition towards the classical forms of poetry. Consequently, the act of Garip is not the leader of new Turkish poetry during the age of Republic. Although the first examples were given by the two poets which we mention above, the Act of Garip took the most important part for the success of new Turkish poetry. Garip was welcomed with a great reaction by the poets and the newspapers. This reaction cames both, the old poets who defense the classical forms of poetry and the new poets who gives the examples of new poetry. Especially the old poets, who supports the use of syllabic metre in poetry and the group of traditionalists, accused the Garip poets of simplifying the poetry for a long time. The socialist poets who take Nâzım Hikmet as an example, criticize the three poets of Garip of being under the control of government. But, during the 40's the poet, most of included the ones who criticize them was effected by their poetry and give lots of work. Later this effect, was degenarated by the young poets. Consequently in 40's, the act of Garip, gives the way to the form of poetry. This effect goes till 1950 which the act was over. In 50's we see the new type of poetires. After the dead of Orhan Veli Kanık the act of Garip lose its effect. In this time, the new acts such as Hisar, Mavi and İkinci Yeni, are a kind of reaction to the act of Garip. Especially the act of İkinci Yeni, totally the opposite of Garip. They support the image, using of art deliberately and compound words. On the other hand, the expand of word in poetry goes on in this period. Consequently, poet can have the freedom of using nearly every word in poetry. The other thing which the act of Garip brought to poetry is that, rhyme is not necessary in every poetry. 560
