8. SUMMARY This dissertation concern with“the figured Artuqid coins exhibited in the Van Museum”. From the 352 Artuqid coins collected by the museum only 36 coins were selected by ourself for this study. After these Artuqid coins were catalogued, they compared with the resenbling figured coins that belonged to varios periods. The Artuqids who had been lived in southeastern part of Anatolia between 1101-1408 A.D. formed a Turkish-Islamic state. The figures on the Artuqid coins, which are made of copper are similiar those on the Sasanians, Greeks, Romans and Byzantians coins. On the other hand, some figures on these coins reflect the tradition of, Islamic and Central Asian Turks as weel. The figures illustradet on the coins are various and it can be grouped as humans, riders, horoscopes-planets and fantastic figures. This group can be companed Greek, Roman and Byzantian coins which are colled“Classical Period Coin.”On the 26 coins were depicted human figures. The eight of them respectively produced in the Greek (3), Roman (2) and Byzantian (3) tradition. However, the origins of some of the fantastic and horoscopes-planets figures extend to Roman and Byzantian as weel. Altough the Artuqid state had a muslim identity their coins bore foreign influence. It can be explained as follows. Since the land of Artuqids had been habited by Sumer, Assyria, Hittite, Roman and Byzantian in the previous centuries the figured tradition my have been alrady established in the montoroned area. Also, it my have been used similiar kinds of coins in order to make easier trade between the Artuqids and Christian neighbor countries. Generally, the“Kufi”style script is used on the Artuqid coins. The subject of script cosist of the names of the ruler and the khalife with the place where coins are cointed and the coinage year. However, on the few coins are seen the script of“Kelime-i Şehadet”.
