ERO?LU, Ahmet Hikmet,“THE RELIGIOUS AND SOCIAL STATUS OF THE JEWS İN THE OTTOMAN STATE ACCORDING TO THE DOCUMENTS (XVT-XIX eras)”, Ph.D.Thesis, Supervised by Professor Dr. Abdurrahman KÜÇÜK. 230 + VI Page. ABSTRACT This thesis comprises an introduction, four chapters and a conclusion. İn the introduction it researches the status of non- muslim nations according to Islam. And gives information about the non-muslims in the Ottoman State. In the first chapter it has given some information about the Jewish religion and it has been researched the exile process of the Jews of Spain and Portugal. Thus it has been dealing with the persecution to Jews in the European countries, their exile from it and the causes of their acceptance by Ottoman State. In the Second Chapter, it has been shown the“system of millet”in the Ottoman State. After having been shortly told about Greeks and Armenians, it had pointed to the Jewish groups, the differences between them and the area that they lived intensively in the Ottoman State. In the third chapter it has expressed the Jewish roles and influence in the State life. It has been again tried to explain the positive or negative results of Ottoman Jews in the State policy and in the Ottoman citizens. In the fourth chapter, it has been investigated the religious and social life of Ottoman Jews. And plained their religious status, educational institutions, languages and the influences of these institutions to their religious and social life. In addition to this, it has been indicated the Cabbalistic activities and accusations of bloodshed and its effects for Ottoman Jews Community. In conclusion, it has been explored the social and religious status of Jews in the Ottoman State and their roles and effects in the State.
