11 ABSTRACT Ph. D. Thesis DETERMINATION OF MOLAR VARIATION OF TURKISH MICROTUS (MAMMALIA: RODENTIA) GENUS AND ITS PHYLOGENIC RESULTS Mehtap YARDIMCI Ankara University Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences Department of Biology Supervisor : Assoc. Prof. Dr. Erkut KIVANÇ 1997, Page: 128 Jury : Assoc. Prof. Dr. Erkut KIVANÇ Prof. Dr. Metin AKTAŞ Assoc. Prof. Dr. İrfan ALBAYRAK In this study, 277 speciemens of Microtus collected from various areas of Turkey between the years 1994 - 1996 were evaluated in respect to their morphological and biometrical characteristics and it was determined that nine species; M. roberti, M. nivalis, M. gud, M. majori, M. subterraneus, M. guentheri, M. socialis, M. arvalis and M. epiroticus distribute in Turkey. Actual morphotypes of these species were then determined in regards to the morphological and morphometrical characteristics of the upper and the lower molars. Obtained data from the actual measurements were compared to those from fossil morphotypes, and the differerences between the findings obtained from the fossil and actual samples and the philogenetic relationships were discussed. In conclusion, M. arvalis, M. agrestis, and M. guentheri were related to each other at first degree and M. majori, M. socialis, M, epiroticus were related to each other again at first degree. A relationship was detected between these two major groups at second degree; between M. subterraneus and the other six species M. arvalis, M. agrestis, M. guentheri, M. majori, M. socialis, M. epiroticus at third degree and between M. roberti and the species M. nivalis, M. gud at fourth degree. There was no evolutionary differences between the actual and anchestor forms in terms of their primitive and the evolved features.
