This thesis aims to explore the intriguing ways in which Jeanette Winterson's The Stone Gods (2007) deals with the concept of entropy. In the light of various theoretical approaches, entropy is considered to be a double-edged sword since it is regarded as the annihilator and the generator of life. Although Winterson does not explicitly use the word 'entropy', the term reveals itself in the forms of either degradation, destruction or hope; that are perceived as the metaphors of entropy in the following pages. Within the framework of entropy, the novel's first claim is that human beings' endeavours to decrease entropy always result in the degradation of political, moral and social states and environmental destruction. On the other hand, Winterson's writing displays a liberating force whereby entropy enables her to explore the idea of creating new systems in worlds governed by the harsh effects of destruction and degradation. The novel pushes the boundaries of seemingly exhausted possibilities and succeeds in liberating entropy with the claim that energy never perishes but rather transforms.
