University campuses are small communities that provide not only education but also dining, housing, working, and recreational activities. As far as universities are contributors to research, teaching, and consulting the sustainable development goals, have an essential role in promoting innovative models with environmental, social, and economic benefits. Given that innovative campus designs, with its different uses, comes to the forefront, as useful places where sustainable development practices can be implemented. In this thesis, the concept of environmental sustainability as a broad term in university campuses, which can be considered to be small-scale cities, included environmental criteria in applying this, and research was conducted into assessing the implementation of a sustainable campus. In this respect, the main purpose of this thesis is designing a Product-Service System concept for a sustainable university Politecnico di Milano Campus Bovisa Durando, in fact, a“lab”(to test) and“window”(to show) for sustainable innovation replicable even outside the campus. The research background of the thesis, the concept of Sustainable Product-Service System (S.PSS), and the role of universities in sustainable development are discussed as a socio-technical environment to be replicated in the heart of the metropolitan area. All of these design processes are based on two methodologies that have been analyzed and then combined: on one hand, the service design approach and tools, on the Methodology for System Design for Sustainability (MSDS). The design process starts with strategic analysis. Accordingly, environmental sustainability analysis of the existing Politecnico di Milano Campus Bovisa Durando was carried out. These analyzes started with observations on campus by photo-taking, and surveys were held with different users on campus. A total of 100 people, including 20 university staff (academic and employee) and 80 students, participated in the survey. As a result of this research, general and environmental concerns were identified for staff and students. The university's performance in placing sustainability practices was assessed, awareness and performance of existing university sustainability initiatives were measured, and opportunities to develop sustainability practices at the university were determined. In this context, in the light of indicators that include the topics of Environmental Management System (EMS) implementation, energy efficiency, water conservation, landscape sustainability, material/waste conservation, transportation, and leading sustainable campus practices were assessed. These succeeding campuses are analyzed according to the criteria mentioned above and presented as a meta-analysis. Also, by including the Politecnico di Milano Campus Bovisa Durando in this analysis, a summary report was prepared to form a starting point for future sustainability implementations. A solution was proposed based on six criteria by: 1. Providing students with a garden and a kitchen, creating innovative and sustainable systems for food systems in the university campus 2. Meeting some of the energy needs with renewable resources and to implement innovative systems to monitor energy consumption 3. Improving wastewater and rainwater management in roofs and gardens and applying techniques to save water 4. Promoting sustainable mobility and to increase car-sharing and bike-sharing systems 5. Improving waste reduction and separate waste collection through reuse and recycling 6. Improving the environmental quality and raise the awareness of individuals on university campus about sustainability.
