The purpose of the current study is to investigate the effect of epilepsy on family life and whether there are changes in functioning between 1 and 3 years after epilepsy diagnosis in children. Carers of 86 children with epilepsy completed the adapted form of the Impact of Pediatric Epilepsy Scale, although there was only complete longitudinal data (years 1-3 postonset) for 2 of the 86 children. In addition, we obtained the anonymised clinical variables of children to examine whether these affected carer-reported quality of life and functioning. The main finding was that scores were constant across time, with most areas of family life and functioning reported to be affected by the child's epilepsy. Also, we found that there was a negative relationship among age of onset and relationship with siblings, thoughts by others, social and family activities, self-confidence and mood. This is consistent with the literature showing persistent difficulties in children with epilepsy.
