In this study, a non-reinforced concrete pipe was modeled in a three-dimensional (3D) finite element software to identify the influences of erosion voids growing behind the pipe wall on the distribution of the earth pressure and stresses in the pipe. To validate the models, the distribution of the initial earth pressure first determined on the cross section of the middle of the pipe and then compared with the measurements in case studies. Two critical locations (invert and springline) were used to introduce the erosion voids that have various sizes and the changes in the earth pressure and pipe stresses were calculated in the longitudinal direction and the cross section of the middle of the pipe, respectively. After that, the analytical values were compared with the initial values. Especially, when the air voids existed at the springline, a significant increase was observed in earth pressure of more than two (2) times the initial value around the void boundaries. The reason for the increase in earth pressure was found to be due to the location of the air void rather than the size of it. An increase in stresses on the pipe wall was also found when air voids were present at the springline. Conversely, the existence of air voids at the invert caused a decrease in the stresses in the pipe wall. The key finding of this study is that the existence of air voids around the pipe can severely affect the pipe behavior and lead to deteriorations that are critical.
