Özet
The effects of exchange rate volatility on the sport clubs are analysed in this paper. In the last few years, the volatility of the exchange rates has increased. Many sport clubs buy and sell players from international markets. In addition to the trade of players, the clubs may pay the player wages in foreign currency and get some loans in foreign currencies. Some clubs play in different country leagues with different currencies. They may earn in domestic currency and have to pay salaries in foreign currency just like Canadian teams in the North American Leagues. These clubs are exposed to the exchange rate risks. The profit of the club can increase or decrease due to the movements of the exchange rates. High foreign exchange rates can make the acquisition of new talent and cause low sporting performance. Although some clubs use hedging techniques against such risks, it should be analysed in the context of sport economics. Unfortunately, the number of academic studies on the relationship between exchange rates and sport clubs are ultimately limited although there are many studies in the nonacademic journals. In this paper, the effects of exchange rate movements will be analysed through the case studies of three sport clubs which are Galatasaray, Manchester United and Toronto Blue Jays.
