This research explores the perceptions of university students in the UK concerning illegal drug use. In the mid-1990s normalisation of illegal drug use amongst young people was widely discussed; because normalisation is a dynamic and long-term concept, after more than 20 years, this research fills the gap in the literature by reassessing normalisation. This research mainly focuses on the extent to which university students perceive illegal drug use to be normalised, and explores the rationale for such perspectives. Qualitative interviews were held with students in a UK university to explore their in-depth perceptions of recreational, illegal drugs, particularly regarding cannabis and powder cocaine that were normalised from the 1990s onwards, followed by MDMA and ecstasy. The reasons for the normalisation of illegal drug use were found to relate to five themes: (1) the police do not enforce the law; (2) the nightlife sector enables it; (3) drugs are an easy, cheap, guaranteed and quick way to obtain happiness; (4) illegal drug use has high prevalence; and (5) social pressure induces normalised drug use.
