Özet
In the recent years, values education has been gaining importance, both in a global and a national context, with attempts to officially promote (some specific) values in countries such as Australia, Sweden, and England and Wales (Pring, 2010). After the introduction of Fundamental British Values (FBV) by the Department of Education in England and Wales, in 2014, values education has become a heated topic in academic debates. Values, in addition to citizenship, spiritual, moral, social and cultural education (SMSC) as well as personal, social and health education (PSHE), are expected to be taught in other subject areas. Religious education (RE) is one of those subjects, as FBV includes“mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs”(DfE, 2014). In this case study, I aim to examine whether RE makes an important contribution to values education, and explore the views of RE teachers about values education in RE classes, in schools in England and Wales. In the first part of this dissertation, the philosophical debates on the aims of religious and values education are considered before examining the possible contributions of RE. Then, an empirical study carried out with RE teachers, which includes an online survey with 44 teachers and follow-up interviews with 8 teachers, is presented. Although there are some issues related to the approaches of religious and values education, both the philosophical debates and the teachers' perspectives show that RE makes significant contributions to values education. This is because it provides pupils with an opportunity to explore the diversity of religious and non-religious worldviews and helps them develop their critical thinking and rational autonomy to make moral judgements.
