Özet

AİM: This study aims to determine whether abdominal massage has an effect on functional constipation in children. Method: Research; It is a randomized controlled intervention study implemented on patients registered at Dokuz Eylül University Education Family Health Centers. Children between the ages of 24 and 48 months who were diagnosed with functional apathy according to ROMA IV criteria and their mothers registered in family medicine were not included and were evaluated for exclusion, and appropriate medications were included in randomization. The sample size consists of 102 patients, 51 in the intervention group and 51 in the control group. Before starting the research, both the experimental and control groups were given nutrition and toilet training for functional constipation. While the intervention group applied abdominal massage, no additional treatment was recommended in the control group. Personal information formula, Rome IV criteria, Bristol scale records were used for data collection. Research data were evaluated using the SPSS (26.0) program. Descriptive analysis, chi-square analysis, independent t test, Mcnemar, paired t test records in statistical analyses. Results: 51 of the 102 participants in the study are in the intervention group and 51 in the control group. The primary outcome, the ROME IV criteria score, was found to be significantly lower in the intervention group at 15 days and 1 month follow-up. (P<0.05) Among the secondary outcomes, Bristol stool score, number of stools and quality of life scale for children (PEDQL) score were found to be significantly higher in the intervention group. (p<0.05) Conclusions: This study comprehensively addresses the effects of abdominal massage on constipation in children, demonstrating the significant potential of abdominal massage as an alternative intervention in the treatment of pediatric constipation. The results obtained show that abdominal massage has the potential to alleviate constipation problems in children, improve quality of life, correct the Bristol stool scale and relieve constipation according to Rome IV criteria. The use of abdominal massage in the treatment of constipation in children should be expanded. However, the findings need to be supported by further research and large-scale clinical studies.
