Humanity has continued its existence by evolving for centuries; humans are born, grow up, and die. The body it leaves behind is destined to disappear silently into the ground. Throughout this cycle of life and death, ancient people also grappled with questions about how they would position themselves and what they would experience after death. After they passed away, they were attentive to funeral rituals, tomb structures, and inscriptions, in the hope of leaving behind legacy and continuing their lives elsewhere. Although their bodies disappeared, the tombs and inscriptions they left behind provide detailed information about their lives, professions, beliefs, and many other aspects of their society. In addition to all this, tomb inscriptions also contain terms that describe the tomb on which they are located. In this context, 29 grave terms have been identified in 319 inscriptions selected from tombs in Bithynia and Paphlagonia during the Roman Imperial Period. These terms, listed as angeion, anathema, bōmos, ērion, hērōon, thalamos, thēkē, thema, kamara, kenotaphion, larnaks, mnēma, hypomnēma, mnēmeion, monumentum, oikia, oikos, ostothēkē, pyramid, pyelos, sēma, skaphē, soros, stēlē, taphos, telamōn, topos, tymbos, tumulus. These terms are found on many different types of tombstones and structures, such as burial chambers, rock tombs, steles, sarcophagi, and pedestals, throughout both regions. Each term has been examined in terms of its etymological origin and the forms in which it appears in ancient sources and inscriptions, and it has been understood that they have their own specific areas of use. While some terms are used to describe the same tomb form, the usage areas and forms of some terms can constitute a unique field. In this context, it is important to evaluate each term individually and across the region. Furthermore, the evaluation of the local culture and the different cultural elements felt across the region due to external migration are also important aspects of this study.
