Concentrically Braced Frames (CBFs) represent one of the most widely adopted and effective lateral load-resisting systems in contemporary steel construction, especially in regions exposed to significant seismic hazard. Their popularity stems from the combined advantages of high lateral stiffness, effective control of story drifts, and substantial energy dissipation capacity through the tension and compression behavior of diagonal bracing members. In particular, X-type high-ductility bracing configurations have been shown to provide robust and predictable seismic performance due to their ability to develop stable hysteretic behavior and control the distribution of inelastic deformations within the structural system. These characteristics enable CBFs to serve as an efficient structural solution for mid-rise steel buildings where both economic considerations and life-safety performance requirements play a crucial role. From a broader engineering perspective, the seismic behavior of concentrically braced frames has been extensively studied in the past several decades, and modern design codes—including the Turkish Seismic Code for Buildings (TSCB-2018), and AISC Seismic Design Manual—have incorporated performance-based requirements to ensure reliable behavior during severe ground motion. A consistent theme across these design philosophies is the emphasis on concentrating inelastic behavior within the bracing members while maintaining elastic behavior in columns, beams, and connections that form the gravity load-carrying system. This philosophy not only enhances predictability but also facilitates post-earthquake repair strategies by allowing damaged braces to be replaced more easily than frame members. Against this background, the present thesis provides a comprehensive seismic performance evaluation of an existing eight-story steel building that employs concentrically braced steel frames as its main lateral load-resisting system. The building features inverted-V braces at the lower stories and V-shaped braces at the upper levels, forming a continuous vertical bracing system along the height of the structure. The configuration reflects a typical mid-rise CBF layout commonly used in practice, where the bracing elements carry the majority of lateral forces and effectively limit story drifts. Rather than redesigning the structure, the primary objective of this study is to evaluate its seismic performance under the design-level earthquake by examining both global response parameters and localized member behaviors. To ensure an accurate and meaningful assessment, detailed member sizing and connection design calculations were carried out. While these calculations are not the primary focus of the research, they were essential for establishing realistic member properties—including section sizes, slenderness parameters, and material strengths—for use in the numerical modeling phase. The structure incorporates S355 steel sections for columns and S275 steel sections for beams and bracing members, consistent with common engineering practice and capacity design principles. This combination ensures that while the bracing members are expected to yield or buckle under large seismic demands, the beams and columns remain predominantly elastic, thereby protecting the gravity frame and preventing undesirable failure mechanisms such as soft-story formation or column instability. The nonlinear dynamic behavior of the building was evaluated using a numerical model that captures both material and geometric nonlinearity. Although the study deliberately avoids excessive technical detail regarding modeling parameters, it adopts well-established analysis techniques widely used in contemporary earthquake engineering research. The numerical model includes beam–column elements capable of capturing the spread of inelasticity, allowing for a realistic representation of brace buckling, axial yielding, stiffness degradation, and cyclic strength loss. Geometric nonlinearity is incorporated to reflect P-Delta effects and potential stability-related behavior during large lateral displacements. Initial imperfections are assigned to bracing members to better simulate real structural conditions and achieve realistic buckling behavior during compression cycles. To evaluate the building's response under realistic earthquake conditions, a suite of eleven ground motion records was selected from the PEER Ground Motion Database in accordance with TSCB-2018 requirements. The selected records represent a variety of magnitudes, fault mechanisms, rupture distances, and site conditions, providing a comprehensive spectrum of seismic input motions to test the building under different seismic scenarios. Each pair of horizontal components was applied simultaneously to the model, and the records were scaled to ensure consistency with the target design spectrum. This approach ensures that the analysis captures multi-directional effects and reflects the variability inherent in real ground motion characteristics. Global seismic response assessment focused primarily on interstory drift ratios, base shear demands, story shear distributions, and displacement profiles. The analysis results indicate that story drift ratios remain well below the determined limiting value (0.02) for the design earthquake level (DD-2) defined in TSCB-2018. The distribution of drifts along the height of the building follows a smooth and stable trend, with slightly elevated drift concentrations around mid-height stories—a behavior commonly observed in similar braced-frame configurations. Importantly, no soft-story mechanism, sudden stiffness loss, or out-of-plane instability was detected. The base shear values obtained from nonlinear dynamic analyses were higher than the equivalent static design base shear, reflecting the influence of higher-mode effects and inelastic behavior; however, they remained within acceptable ranges consistent with expected brace strengths. The evaluation of story shear distributions revealed that the highest shear forces occurred in the lower stories, gradually decreasing toward the upper levels. This pattern is typical of mid-rise CBF systems subjected to strong seismic excitation, as the lower levels tend to attract more lateral force due to cumulative stiffness and mass distribution. The story shear demands were compared to the expected strengths of the bracing members, and all stories demonstrated sufficient capacity to resist the imposed loads without exceeding performance limits. Local component-level behavior was analyzed with special emphasis on the bracing members due to their critical role in energy dissipation. The braces exhibited a combination of tensile yielding, compressive buckling, and cyclic strength degradation during the analyses. The axial force–deformation relationships consistently displayed stable hysteresis loops across all ground motions, indicating robust energy dissipation capacity. This behavior aligns well with the expected performance of high-ductility bracing members and reinforces the suitability of CBFs for seismic applications. Axial strain demands were evaluated against the deformation limits specified in TSCB-2018 Appendix 5C. The majority of braces fell within the Limited Damage (SH) and Controlled Damage (KH) performance ranges, demonstrating that despite experiencing substantial inelastic action, the braces did not undergo excessive deterioration that would compromise their structural function. In contrast, beams and columns remained predominantly elastic throughout the analyses, with demand-capacity ratios significantly below unity. This confirms that the capacity design principles were successfully implemented and that the energy-dissipating mechanisms were effectively concentrated within the bracing members. As a result, no undesirable redistribution of forces or formation of plastic hinges in beams or columns was observed. This finding further validates the structural robustness of the building and highlights the importance of proper hierarchy in designing braced systems for seismic resistance. The overall stability of the structure during the analyses was examined through residual deformation assessments, displacement time histories, and the consistency of stiffness degradation patterns. The results indicate that the building maintained stable seismic behavior throughout the duration of strong ground motion. No torsional irregularity, lateral–torsional coupling, or global instability was detected. Residual drifts were minimal and fell within acceptable limits, suggesting that the structure would remain functional and repairable following a design-level earthquake. In conclusion, the findings of this study confirm that the examined eight-story steel building satisfies the seismic performance objectives prescribed by TSCB-2018 for the design-level earthquake. The results demonstrate that the structure possesses adequate lateral stiffness, ductility capacity, and energy dissipation capability to withstand severe seismic demands without significant damage. The concentration of inelastic behavior within the bracing members, the stability of global drift patterns, and the elastic response of the primary frame members collectively validate the effectiveness of concentrically braced steel frames as a reliable lateral load-resisting system for mid-rise steel buildings. Furthermore, the study highlights the importance of using realistic nonlinear analysis methods and appropriately selected ground motion records when evaluating the performance of existing steel structures. Overall, the research contributes meaningful insight into the seismic reliability of CBF systems and supports their continued use in earthquake-prone regions where structural safety and performance-based design considerations are of paramount importance.
