Özet
Bu çalışma, Alfred Marshall'ın ekonomik gelişme ile sosyo-kültürel yapılar arasında kurduğu ilişkiyi, Jürgen Habermas'ın toplum kuramındaki“yaşam dünyası”ve“sistem”ayrımı çerçevesinde analiz etmektedir. Marshall, ekonomik gelişmeyi, iktisadi göstergelerin ötesine geçen ve bireyin zihinsel, ahlaki ve fiziksel kapasitelerini artıran bütüncül bir toplumsal ilerleme meselesi olarak ele almaktadır. Bu bağlamda, çalışmada, piyasa, devlet, aile, eğitim ve hukuk kurumları, Marshall'ın düşüncesinde maddi refah ile etik ilerlemeyi bir araya getiren temel yapılar olarak incelenmektedir. Habermas ise modern toplumu, yaşam dünyası (aile ve eğitim) ve sistem (piyasa, devlet ve hukuk) olmak üzere iki ayrı fakat ilişkili düzlemde kavramsallaştırmakta ve kapitalist gelişme sürecinde bu iki alan arasında çeşitli gerilimlerin ortaya çıkabileceğini ileri sürmektedir. Habermas'ın toplum kuramı, bu yönüyle, Marshall'ın ilerlemenin taşıyıcısı olarak gördüğü kurumların sistemik zorunluluklar altında nasıl birer kriz alanına dönüşebileceğine dair eleştirel bir zemin sunmaktadır. İktisat ve sosyoloji disiplinlerini özgün bir teorik diyalog içinde buluşturan bu tezde, her iki düşünürde ortak biçimde öne çıkan kurumlar aracılığıyla ekonomik gelişmenin bireysel ve toplumsal yapılarla ilişkisi analiz edilmektedir. Bu çerçevede çalışma, kapitalist ekonomik gelişmenin hem etik bir ilerleme imkânı hem de bireysel ve toplumsal yeniden üretim alanlarında kriz potansiyeli barındıran ikili karakterini görünür kılmaktadır.

This study analyzes the relationship that Alfred Marshall establishes between economic development and socio-cultural structures within the framework of Jürgen Habermas's distinction between the“lifeworld”and the“system”in his theory of society. Marshall conceptualizes economic development as a comprehensive question of social progress that goes beyond economic indicators and enhances the mental, moral, and physical capacities of the individual. In this context, the institutions of the market, the state, the family, education, and law are examined as the fundamental structures in Marshall's thought that bring together material welfare and ethical progress. Habermas, on the other hand, conceptualizes modern society as consisting of two distinct yet interrelated levels, namely the lifeworld (family and education) and the system (market, state, and law), and argues that various tensions may emerge between these two spheres in the process of capitalist development. In this respect, Habermas's theory of society provides a critical framework for understanding how the institutions that Marshall regards as carriers of progress may, under systemic imperatives, be transformed into sites of crisis. By bringing economics and sociology into an original theoretical dialogue, this thesis analyzes the relationship between economic development and individual and social structures through the institutions that are commonly emphasized in both thinkers. This study, within this framework, reveals the dual character of capitalist economic development as both an opportunity for ethical progress and as containing a potential for crises in the domains of individual and social reproduction.
