The human species, despite possessing limited biological capacities, has historically demonstrated the ability to transform both its environment and its own biological structure. This transformative capacity has gained a new dimension particularly through the understanding of biological structure at the genetic level and its conceptualization as a system open to intervention. The conceptualization of biological structure as a system that can be read and modified through genetic information makes it possible to consider life not merely as an observable phenomenon but also as a process that can be designed—in other words,“hacked.”The question“Can biological structure be hacked?”constitutes the basis of this new perspective and the emergence of synthetic biology. This fundamental conceptual transformation has become increasingly tangible in the twenty-first century with the exponentially accelerating developments in technology and biotechnology. Gene-editing technologies, synthetic biology, and other biotechnological applications make it possible to redefine the biological limits of human beings through both institutional and technoscientific interventions. In particular, with the emergence of synthetic biology (SB), which treats living organisms not merely as natural and historical entities but as processes that can be designed, constructed, and reprogrammed in laboratory environments, an ontological and epistemological rupture has occurred within the biological sciences. While this rupture redraws the boundaries of scientific practices, it also creates a ground for discussions on the production of knowledge within an epistemic collective independent of institutional corporations, laboratories, and universities, as well as on the democratization of scientific knowledge. The biohacking culture, which constitutes the main focus of this thesis, makes this process of democratization visible through spatial, technical, social, and political processes. Biohacking, as a non-institutional practice situated between knowledge production and application (praxis) in synthetic biology, empowers individuals' control over their own bodies through experiments conducted in garages, kitchens, and independent laboratories, while simultaneously embodying the ethos of open-source science. Beyond merely intervening technologically in the human body, biohacking reveals a process of ontological and epistemic reconfiguration in which the individual becomes both the subject and the object of their own body. Within this process, framed by the enhancement of the human body and mind through NBIC technologies, the question shifts from“What is the human being?”to“What is the human becoming?”Thus, the individual is understood not as a fixed essence but as a process that continuously transforms itself through interactions and technological interventions. The biohacking process intersects with philosophical approaches aimed at transforming the human being through technological interventions such as eliminating genetic diseases, developing human capacities, and human enhancement. In this context, the transhumanist perspective brings into discussion the idea that humanity may advance to a new stage by transcending the limits of the biological body and the finitude of life, thereby reopening fundamental debates about human nature. In this study, the conception of the human being is examined through biohacking and human enhancement practices within the framework of critical philosophical anthropology, drawing on posthumanist and new materialist perspectives. From the perspective of these new ontologies, the human cannot be defined by a single, fixed identity but rather emerges as a processual being constituted through the interrelations of body, technology, knowledge, and ethical responsibility. In this sense, biohacking appears as a field that simultaneously transforms the ontological status of the human being, the modes of knowledge production, and ethical responsibilities. The thesis aims to present a new posthumanist conceptual framework at the intersection of critical philosophical anthropology by examining the technologically reconstructed identity of the human being and the ontological transformation of the human body.
