This dissertation aims to examine the development of the natural sciences (fen bilimleri) in the Ottoman Empire by investigating how Ottoman scholars inherited the Islamic tradition of the natural sciences and the kinds of original contributions they made to this intellectual legacy. Rather than covering the entirety of the natural sciences, the study is limited to the disciplines concerned with inanimate entities on Earth—namely physics, chemistry, geology, and mineralogy. The central research question of the dissertation is formulated as follows: What was the state of the natural sciences (physics, chemistry, geology, and mineralogy) in the Ottoman Empire, and what was the condition of education in these fields? The study focuses on examining the status of the natural sciences and the education related to them in the Ottoman Empire, restricting its scope to institutions of higher education while excluding primary and secondary educational institutions. It provides a detailed analysis of how the natural sciences were positioned, which textbooks were taught, and which instructional methods were employed in institutions such as the İdâdîs, Mühendishânes, Harbiye, Tıbbiye, and Dârülfünûn. Within the scope of the dissertation, several subsidiary problems are also addressed, including the place of the natural sciences in the classification of sciences in Islamic civilization and the Ottoman intellectual tradition, the nature of the scientific heritage transmitted from the Islamic world to the Ottomans, the historical development of the Ottoman natural sciences, and the scholarly value of the works produced in these fields. By comparing the classical and modern periods, the study highlights differences in educational institutions, curricula, and teaching methods. The primary methodology adopted in this study is textual analysis, a method widely employed in research in the history of science. Accordingly, historical sources are interpreted with careful attention to the terminology, intellectual framework, and institutional context of their respective periods. A historical reading of works related to the natural sciences has been conducted, and through the method of critical text analysis, the prefaces, tables of contents, and thematic headings of these works have been rendered into modern Turkish. In the first chapter, the use of the concept of fen in Islamic civilization and its transformation within the Ottoman intellectual world are examined, emphasizing that the natural sciences were regarded as legitimate and necessary fields of knowledge within the rational sciences. In the second chapter, works written in Ottoman Turkish in the fields of physics, chemistry, geology, and mineralogy are identified through an extensive survey. Out of a total of 340 works identified, 240—those falling within the scope of the dissertation and determined to have been taught in higher education—are introduced and analyzed. The third chapter evaluates the relationship between the natural sciences and scientific education in the Ottoman Empire and various period-specific, intellectual, social, and institutional factors using both qualitative and quantitative methods. The findings demonstrate that the Ottoman natural sciences did not possess a merely transmissive character; rather, they developed through original interpretations and practices during certain periods.
