Hagia Sophia, as a monument that has continuously attracted attention from the time of its construction to the present day, has been ascribed a prominent position on a global scale and has attained the status of an exceptional element of world cultural heritage. Hagia Sophia has maintained its significance through the diverse perceptions it has engendered in the collective memories of both Western and Eastern societies—as the Great Church of Christianity, as a symbol of the Ottoman conquest for the Turks, and as a central emblem of the Megali Idea within the framework of Greek irredentist aspirations. Both during its function as a church and subsequently as a mosque, it has remained a focal point of interest, not only due to its partially enigmatic historical legacy spanning centuries, but also owing to its architecturally innovative and distinctive characteristics. Particularly noteworthy are the narratives constructed by the Greek population following the Ottoman conquest of İstanbul, which are largely shaped within the framework of legend and myth. These narratives offer a distinctive interpretative lens through which Hagia Sophia has been perceived. As a symbol of conquest, Hagia Sophia was converted into a mosque by Sultan Mehmed II. Subsequently, recognizing its value as a universal cultural heritage site, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk redefined its status by designating it as a museum, thereby ensuring its preservation for the benefit of humanity during the early Republican period. From 1453 onwards, throughout the centuries of Ottoman rule, Hagia Sophia has retained a central place in Greek and broader Hellenic narratives and collective memory. This study seeks to examine the legends and perceptions related to Hagia Sophia, as reflected in primary Turkish and Greek sources, and to analyze their influence on the collective consciousness of the Greek community.
