This study aims to examine the iconography of the Antichrist, a prominent figure in Christian eschatology, during the Medieval and Renaissance periods. As the ultimate enemy destined to confront Jesus Christ at the end of days, this figure has influenced Christianity for centuries through his collaboration with Satan and his inherent human nature. He has frequently served as a tool of moral propaganda, embodying the enemies of the Church or the personification of deviation from faith. At other times, the Antichrist became a mysterious object of expectation, whose emergence was considered a prerequisite for the commencement of the millennial cycle—the thousand-year earthly utopia to be established prior to the Last Judgment. Beyond his role as a tyrannical and malevolent final adversary clashing with Christ, the Antichrist is a deceiver who misleads humanity by assuming the guise of a false Messiah, seducing the faithful away from the path of religion. This dual nature—specifically his human appearance concealing a diabolical essence—renders him iconographically ambiguous yet profoundly compelling. The Antichrist has been depicted in numerous guises, ranging from a tyrannical king to a monstrous beast, and from the leader of a heretical sect to marginalized and villainized groups excluded from the community. Conversely, through a purely theological lens, he is often reduced to a moral archetype incorporating the various malevolent types found in Holy Scripture with whom the Church is perceived to struggle. Rather than being a static figure, the Antichrist is a character that evolved throughout history, acquiring new attributes with each successive interpretation while maintaining his core essence; in certain contexts, he is even presented as a plural rather than a singular entity. Consisting of four main chapters, this dissertation first addresses the emergence and development of the Antichrist figure within the framework of Biblical texts and theological interpretations. The second and third chapters focus on Antichrist iconography, examining the defining characteristics of the figure's mode of representation across all stages of Medieval art and the variations in representational templates within the context of contemporary theological approaches and historical perspectives. In the final chapter, which analyzes depictions of the Antichrist during the Renaissance and Reformation, the qualities of the figure that converge with or diverge from the Medieval logic of representation are highlighted through an analysis of specific works. Throughout this study, theological approaches, shifting social values, and political processes have been integrated into the interpretation of all images examined via the iconographic method, thereby investigating the potential influences of the specific historical contexts on the evolution of Antichrist iconography.
