Özet
Anlamın metafiziği, anlamlılığın zeminini inceleyen felsefî bir disiplindir. Metasemantik, temelci semantik (foundational semantics) ve semantiğin felsefesi gibi isimlerle de anılıyor olan bu disiplin, dildeki kelime, ifade ve cümlelerin anlamlı olmalarını mümkün kılan koşulları ve bu koşulların anlamlılığa yönelik tesirini araştırmaktadır. O, çağdaş analitik felsefe içerisinde müstakil bir çalışma sahası olarak yeni gelişmekte olan bir disiplindir. Bununla birlikte onun birçok aslî meselesi analitik felsefenin büyük isimleri tarafından farklı bağlamlarda ele alınmış ve geliştirilmiştir. Kripke bu isimlerin başında gelmektedir. O, birer literatür vücuda getirmiş olan iki temel eserinde, Adlandırma ve Zorunluluk ile Wittgenstein Kurallar ve Özel Dil isimli eserlerinde anlamı mümkün kılan koşullara dair çok nitelikli ve etkili soruşturmalarda bulunmuştur. Anlamın metafiziği için bütünlüklü bir çerçeve ortaya koymayı ve bu disiplinin ana sorunsallarını ayrıntılı bir şekilde inceleyip nitelikli bir zemin inşa etmeyi hedefleyen bu çalışmamız Kripke'nin incelemelerini önemli bir çıkış noktası olarak telakki etmiş ve araştırmalarını bu incelemeler üzerine bina etmiştir. Bu bağlamda çalışmamız bir metasemantik teori olarak Kripke'nin anlam teorisini incelemekte, onu anlamın imkân koşulları açısından geliştirmekte ve anlamın metafiziği için bütüncül bir çerçeve sunmaktadır. Çalışmamızın anlam-nesne ilişkisini ele alan birinci bölümünde biz Kripke'nin özel isimler ve doğal tür adlarının semantiği için ortaya koyduğu düşünceyi tasvir ve tahlil ediyor ve bu düşünceyi diğer kelime türlerinin semantik zeminine yönelik incelemeler için farklı açılardan geliştiriyoruz. Bu sadette bağlam duyarlı terimler, cins isimler, fiiller, ekler, edatlar ve bağlaçların metasemantiğini yapıyoruz. Ardından anlam-kullanım ilişkisini ele alan ikinci bölümde semantik nihilizmi iddia eden Kripkenstein paradoksunu (kural izleme paradoksu) ve semantik irrealizmi kabullenen skeptik çözümü izah ediyoruz. Bu izahtan sonra paradoks için geliştirdiğimiz yarı-skeptik çözümü on safhada sunuyoruz. Sunum boyunca delâletin doğası, imkânı ve varoluş zemini üzerinde ayrıntılı analizler yapıyor, anlamın normatifliği problemini tahlil ediyor ve kullanımları mümkün kılan koşulları inceliyoruz. Yarı-skeptik çözümü tamamladıktan sonra ise anlamın imkân koşullarıyla ilgili çok hayati bir mesele olan mecaz olgusuna yoğunlaşıyor ve hakikat-mecaz ayrımının künhüne inmeye çalışıyoruz. Ardından üçüncü bölümde delâlet ve mecaz için birer model inşa ediyor ve bu modeller üzerinden anlamın metafiziği için bütüncül bir çerçeve sunuyoruz. Çalışmanın üç bölümünde de İslamî ilimler müktesebatından, özellikle vaz ve mecaz teorilerinden de yararlanıyor ve İslamî ilimlerin en kapsamlı metasemantik teorisi olan vaz teorisine yönelik esaslı kritiklerde bulunuyoruz. Sonuç bölümünde ise çalışma boyunca ortaya koyduğumuz metasemantik incelemelerin başka felsefî disiplinler üzerindeki muhtemel etkilerini ve İslamî ilimlerin farklı alanları için doğuracağı sonuçları ele alıyoruz.

The metaphysics of meaning is a philosophical discipline that examines the grounds of meaningfulness. Also referred to as metasemantics, foundational semantics, or the philosophy of semantics, this discipline investigates the conditions that make words, expressions, and sentences in language meaningful, and how these conditions contribute to meaningfulness. It is a newly developing discipline as an independent field of study within contemporary analytic philosophy. Nevertheless, many of its core problems have been addressed and developed in various contexts by major figures of analytic philosophy. Saul Kripke stands at the forefront of these figures. In his two seminal works, Naming and Necessity and Wittgenstein on Rules and Private Language, which have each established a body of literature, he conducted highly insightful and influential inquiries into the foundations of meaning. This study, aiming to present a comprehensive framework for the metaphysics of meaning and to establish a solid foundation by examining the main problems of this discipline in detail, considers Kripke's investigations as a significant point of departure and builds its research upon them. In this context, the study analyzes Kripke's theory of meaning as a metasemantic theory, develops it in terms of the foundations of meaning, and offers a holistic framework for the metaphysics of meaning. In the first chapter of our study, which addresses the meaning–object relation, we describe and analyze the account put forward by Kripke regarding the semantics of proper names and natural kind terms, and we further develop this account from various perspectives for investigations into the semantic foundations of other types of words. In this respect, we provide metasemantic analyses of context-sensitive expressions, common nouns, verbs, affixes, prepositions, and conjunctions. In the second chapter, which addresses the meaning–use relation, we explain the Kripkenstein paradox (the rule-following paradox), which advances semantic nihilism, along with the skeptical solution that adopts semantic irrealism. Following this exposition, we present our own semi-skeptical solution to the paradox in ten stages. Throughout this presentation, we conduct detailed analyses on the nature, possibility, and existential basis of signification (dalālah), examine the problem of the normativity of meaning, and investigate the conditions that make linguistic use possible. After completing the semi-skeptical solution, we focus on the phenomenon of metaphor—an issue of crucial importance for the foundations of meaning—and attempt to uncover the essence of the distinction between literal and figurative meaning. In the third chapter, we construct models for signification and metaphor and, through these models, present a comprehensive framework for the metaphysics of meaning. In all three chapters, we also draw on the intellectual heritage of Islamic sciences, particularly theories of waḍʿ (designation) and metaphor, and offer substantial critiques of waḍʿ theory, which constitutes the most comprehensive metasemantic theory within the Islamic scholarly tradition. In the conclusion, we address the potential implications of the metasemantic analyses developed throughout the study for other philosophical disciplines, as well as the consequences they may have for various fields within the Islamic sciences.
