This research examines the Derinkuyu Underground City, considered one of the largest underground settlements at an urban scale in the world, through an interdisciplinary perspective based on the components of architectural typology, spatial representation, and acoustic character. The primary aim of the study is to evaluate the spatial potential of underground settlements through a holistic analytical model grounded in physical parameters such as volumetric organization, construction techniques, and material behavior. In today's world, where the limits of surface spaces are increasingly being reached, underground cities offer significant references for future settlement discussions through their principles of spatial organization, environmental adaptation, and continuity of life. Within the scope of the research, the developed typological framework systematically classifies the complex structure of Derinkuyu based on functional, formal, volumetric, and relational criteria. Accordingly, six main typological groups have been identified within the settlement: living spaces; production and storage areas; gathering and worship spaces; educational units; livestock areas; and transition, circulation, and defense spaces. The analyses reveal that spatial organization in underground architecture does not directly correspond to floor boundaries; rather, it demonstrates the existence of a flexible system in which typologies recur across different levels and expand and transform over time. The circulation network and hierarchical organization are structured as an active control mechanism that regulates both physical movement and visual and auditory privacy through“threshold spaces,”such as narrowed passages, sudden level changes, and defensive stone doors. In terms of spatial representation, AI-assisted digital reconstruction methods were employed to move beyond the limits of existing physical data. The representations produced in this process were evaluated not merely as tools for visual documentation, but as analytical simulation environments in which probabilistic scenarios of past life practices are tested. The virtual reconstructions generated for the spaces reveal the settlement's defense strategies and social organization, while also providing the geometrical accuracy required for acoustic analysis. Thus, spatial representation is positioned as a fundamental research component that establishes a bridge between architectural interpretation and acoustic evaluation. The analysis of acoustic character defines the auditory identity of Derinkuyu through quantitative data. Reverberation time (RT) measurements and simulations confirm that different typologies—such as the church, kitchen, and living spaces—produce distinct acoustic environments. The church located on the minus seventh level, as the largest volumetric unit, provides an auditory atmosphere suitable for ritual and collective use, with reverberation times reaching 4.79 seconds at low frequencies, whereas living spaces offer high levels of privacy and silence with low reverberation times around 0.42 seconds. Furthermore, calculations conducted using the“inverse analysis”method reveal that the sound absorption properties of the volcanic tuff stone, which constitutes the surface material, vary depending on the depth levels of the settlement and differences in geological layers. In conclusion, this study proposes an interdisciplinary methodological framework for interpreting underground architecture through the“Three-Axis Holistic Analysis Model,”which integrates architectural typology, spatial representation, and acoustic character. The findings obtained in the case of Derinkuyu, together with the developed methodological framework, provide a scientific reference not only for the documentation of historical underground cities, but also for the determination of sustainable design criteria for contemporary underground structures.
