Water and seawater temperature are critical environmental variables in terms of ecosystem functioning, water quality, dissolved oxygen balance, biological processes, marine heat waves, climate change impacts, and coastal management. However, many studies in the temperature prediction literature report model success primarily using classical performance metrics such as RMSE, MAE, MSE, or R²; error distribution, systematic bias, temporal error behavior, and practical error acceptance level are often not sufficiently discussed together. The objective of this study is to compare machine learning models based on 12 lagged temperature variables for univariate water/seawater temperature prediction and to evaluate their performance within a holistic error analysis framework. In this study, a univariate time series dataset based on observational data obtained from the Samsun Meteorological Station for the 2013–2023 period was used to forecast water temperature. The prediction target is defined as target_temp, and the model inputs are created from the variables temp_lag1–temp_lag12. The modeling process was carried out in the MATLAB Regression Learner environment; Gaussian Process Regression, Artificial Neural Network, Stepwise Linear Regression, Linear Regression, Support Vector Machine, Ensemble, Decision Tree, and Kernel models were examined using an independent testing approach. The findings showed that the most successful model was Gaussian Process Regression. This model produced RMSE = 0,3837, MAE = 0,2104, MSE = 0,1472, and R² = 0,9960 on the test dataset. The Artificial Neural Network model has emerged as a strong alternative, yielding results very close to GPR. The study's unique contribution lies in making visible not only how accurate the model is, but also how it makes mistakes, by evaluating model performance using error density, fiddle plot, Bland–Altman analysis, error time series, error acceptance curves, and multi-metric performance analysis. The results demonstrate that historical temperature information can provide a strong predictive basis and that simple data structures can have significant application value in environmental monitoring and decision support systems.
