This study aims to analyse the return migration from the Syriac diaspora in Europe to Tur Abdin from the perspective of social memory. The study primarily examines how the Syriac collective memory, which has taken shape over decades within the diaspora, motivates individuals to return to their homeland, and explores the role this memory plays in the process of re-establishing a sense of belonging among returnees in Tur Abdin. The scope of the study encompasses the experiences of Syriacs who migrated from Türkiye to Europe in the second half of the 20th for various socio-political reasons and who have made a permanent return to their ancestral homeland over the past twenty five years. Designed using qualitative research methods and drawing on theories of return migration and social memory, this study lies at the intersection of political science, sociology and migration studies. The study adopted a phenomenological pattern, and data were collected through semi-structured interviews with twenty one returnees and five leading experts from the Syriac community, selected using purposive sampling. The data collected from the returnees was analysed using an inductive approach with the support of the MAXQDA programme, thereby identifying thematic patterns. In the first chapter of the study, which comprises three main sections in total, theories of return migration and social memory are examined; a theoretical framework has been established to aid the analysis of the data collected in the field. In the second chapter, the processes leading to the departure of the Syriac people from Tur Abdin are examined, and the structure and activities of the Syriac diaspora in Europe are discussed. In this way, the historical background of the migrations and the current situation of the Syriac diaspora are outlined. In the third and final chapter, the research methodology is outlined in detail and the findings obtained from the field are analysed. The research findings indicate that the return migration of the Syriac community constitutes a project of identity and existence, in contrast to the economically focused approaches found in neoclassical theories of return migration. The collective memory that has taken shape within the diaspora has served as a defence mechanism against the threat of assimilation, particularly for younger generations, thereby steering individuals towards the homeland. It has been observed that returnees reconsile the traumatic memories of the past with the spiritual sanctity of the homeland and a sense of responsibility towards their ancestors. In this process, physical elements such as churches, monasteries and family homes function not merely as places of worship, culture and shelter, but as sites of compulsory memory onto which collective memory is imprinted. The research found that the return to Tur Abdin constitutes an ontological act of refuge that facilitates the restoration of a damaged identity through the use of space, and that collective memory serves as both a driving force and cultural compass in this process.
