Özet (Çeviri)

ABSTRACT In the present thesis we discussed the evaluation of a literary text in the histo- biographical and the reader-response theories of literary criticism in four chapters. The first one deals with the birth, the development, the chief features, and the restrictions of the histo-biographical literary criticism. At the end of the first chapter we chose the romantic literary movement as an example in the practice of the histo- biographical approach. In the second chapter of the thesis we focused on the reader-response criticism. Since the reader-response theory is an interdisciplinary study, rather than a unified and single position, we dwelt on this critical approach with reference to the hermeneutics, phenomenology, and linguistics and explained how such kinds of tendencies contributed to the reader-response theory of literary criticism. We did not analyse a particular text practicing the reader-response theory, because the reader- response criticism, in contrast to the histo-biographical theory, does not bring a certain analytical procedure. In this theory all kinds of interpretations are acceptable in their own ways. In the third chapter of this thesis we compared the important concepts in the reader-response and histo-biographical theories such as interpretation, response, context, reader, and meaning. We arrived at the conclusion that each theory of criticism is admissible and valuable for its own sake. Therefore, there is no right or wrong theory in the literary studies. What is of vital importance is that each literary theory has to find a strong reference. For instance, the reference of the histo- biographical theory is a cultural, historical and biographical context; on the other hand, the main reference of the reader-response theory is the reader and his reading activity. However, their aim is the same: to discover the meaning of a text. This is a historical and descriptive study; therefore, instead of discovering new facts we compared the two approaches and collected the arguments present in both theories. We began with introducing the subjects and then, went on to discuss the development of the theories with the facts that contributed to this process. Thus, one can find much about what are the histo-biographical and the reader-response theories as well as the major characteristics of the two approaches with their historical and intellectual background in the thesis We assumed that we might reach at interesting facts by the comparison of the two theories. While the histo-biographical theory is one of the leading traditional approaches in the history of literary studies, the reader-response theory is one of the contemporaries. On the surface they seem to be a quite different area of literary studies but there are some interesting similarities in the evaluation of a literary text in both theories. For instance, both theory accepts the role of the author and social context in the production of a literary work of art. The histo-biographical and the reader-response theories agree that interpretation of a text may vary according to the intellectual, linguistic capacity and other individual characteristics of the interpreter.
