Özet
XV ÖZET Deıji jen saman ve ihtiyaçlar karşısında toplumun belli başlı kurumları birtakım yeni d üzeni e melere tabi tutulur, üniversite de bu kurumlardan biridir, üniversitelerin devamlı gelişen fonksiyonları, büyük öğrenci akımı, derişen ihtiyaçlara paralel olarak derişen öğrenci tipi, kurumların toplum hayatına katılımlarının artması, değişen akademisyenler ve gittikçe artan mâlî ihtiyaçlar gibi sebepler günümüz üniversitesine yeni bir çehre kazandırmıştır. İngiliz yazan ve akademisyeni David Lodge, Changing Placeş ( 1 975), Small World (1984) ve Nice Work ( 1 988) isimli eserlerinde dünyayı, akademik ve sosyal açıdan durgun ve seviyesiz bir hayatın temsil edildiği büyük bir Üniversite olarak görmekte ve içinde yaşadığımız toplumu değişik yönleriyle yansıtmaktadır. İngiliz Üniversitelerinin yaşadığı zor dönemleri aksettirirken. Lodge aynı zamanda toplum ve ekonominin içinde bulunduğu krizi de yansıtmakta ve böylelikle kampus romanı ile sosyal hicvi birleştirmektedir. Lodge'un eserlerinde çizdiği akademisyen imajının pek de yüceltici olduğu söylenemez. Lodge üniversitelerdeki bölünme ve çöküşü, üniversite öğretim kadrosunun yetersizlikleri, sürdürdükleri hayat tarzı, birbirleriyle olan ilişkileri ve üniversite iç kavgalarıyla izah etmektedir. Bunun yanı sıra, edebiyatın hayat içindeki yerini araştırmakta ve çağdaş yazar ile okuyucusu arasında gittikçe artan uçurumu yaratan sebepleri de tartışmaktadır. Ayrıca Thatcher hükümetinin üniversite ve ekonomi politikasını ve bu politikanın her iki kurumda yarattığı gülünç durumları hicvederek, üniversite ve iş dünyası arasındaki karşılıklı ilişkilerin yaratabileceği durumları incelemiştir. Her ne kadar, ilk bakışta, üniversite ve endüstri, arndç ve yöntemleri açımdan birbirleri ile bağdaşabilir görünmese de, beraber çalışabilir ve toplumun sosyal ve ekonomik ilerlemesine yardımcı olabilirler. Yeter, ki, böyle bir işbirliği, üniversiteyi esas amaçlarından uzaklaştırmasın ve onun, toplumu yönlendirici liderlik vasfını zedelemesin. Diğer bir deyişle, üniversitenin saygınlığı, ancak yönlendiriciliğini yaptığı toplum ve iş dünyası ile kendi arasındaki belirli mesafeyi koruyabilmesine bağlıdır.

ABSTRACT From time to time moat major institutions undergo reconsideration, revision and varying degrees of reorganisation. Such evolution is a natural and appropriate reaction to changing times and changing needs. The continually expanding functions of universities, the massive influx of students, the changing characteristics of students with changing needs, the greater involvement of institutions in the life of the community, the changing university academic, the greater need for financial support have all operated to create the pre3ent-day university. i In his works Changing Places (197S), Small World (1984) and Nice Work ( 1 988), the British writer and literary academic David Lodge conceives the world as a huge university whose members represent a kind of life that is academically and socially i stagnant and disreputable but cheerful, and his works shadow the peculiar society we now live in. While revealing the crisis the British universities are going through. Lodge also mirrors the crisis of society and industry, and thus combines campus fiction with social satire. The image of the academic depicted in Lodge's works is not a very complimentary one. He describes the disintegration and decadence in the university in terms of the academic incompetence of its staff, their way of life, interpersonal relationships and university in-fightings. He questions the role of literature in life, and states the reasons behind the widening and almost unbridgeable gap between the contemporary writer and the general public. He also discusses the motives underlying the Thatcher policy concerning the university and industry, and he comments on the two-way nature of links between the university and the world of business. Though seemingly incompatible, the university and industry could work together to contribute to the social and economic flourishing of society provided that this involvement in community work does not distract the university from performing its task of intellectual leadership. In other words, the university should be standing at a critical distance from industry and society to preserve a 3acred image of itself.
