Özet
ii ÖZET Bu doktora çalışmasının amacı David Storey' nin aile oyunlarında ikileme giren insanı incelemektir. Storey 'e göre bir bireyin yetiştirilmesi ve psikolojik gelişiminde anne-babaların rolü çok önemlidir. Bu yüzden aile bir kişinin kendisiyle barışık ve mutlu olmasında en önemli etkenlerdendir. Tezin çıkış noktası Storey 'nin kendi ailesiyle olan ilişkilerinden kaynaklanmaktadır. Yazarın kendi istekleri ile ailesinin ondan beklentilerinin çatışması Storey' i bir ikileme sokmuş ve yıllar boyu mutsuz olmasına neden olmuştur. Tıpkı kendisi gibi oyunlarındaki kahramanlar da ailelerinin toplumda bir yer edinmek için sıkı bir eğitime inanmaları, kuşaklar arası çatışma, ebeveynlerin ve özellikle annelerin aşırı baskısı nedenleriyle bir ikileme girip acı çekmişlerdir. Giriş bölümünde, Storey 'in yaşamında ve sanatında ailesinin etkisi vurgulanmakta, bunların tez konusu ile ilişkisi tartışılmakta ve tiyatro sanatı hakkında bilgi verilmektedir. Gelişme bölümünde, kronolojik olarak oyunlar tek tek ele alınıp kişilerin karakter analizleri derinlemesine yapılarak aile bireyleri ile ilişkileri incelenmekte, ikileme girme nedenleri ortaya konmakta ve çözüm aranmaktadır. Bu çalışma için sırasıyla The Restoration of Arnold Middleton. In Celebration, The Contractor. The Farm ve Mother ' s Pay adlı oyunlar seçilmiştir. The Restoration of Arnold Middleton oyunu evliliği ve işi iyi gitmediği için bir ikileme girip hayalİÜ dunyasxnda kendisini kral zanneden tarih öğretmeni Arnold ile ilgilidir. In Celebration oyununda Andrew, Colin ve Steven kardeşler eğitim görmüş ve toplumda bir yer edinmiş olmalarına rağmen mutsuzdurlar. Mutsuzlukları için de ebeveynlerini suçlamaktadırlar. The Contractor oyununda çadır fabrikası sahibi Ewbank kızının düğünü için mesleğinin en güzel çadırını kurarken bile tek oğlu Paul için çok endişelidir. Paul Oxford 'da eğitim görmesine rağmen işsizdir. Esas sorunu bir kişilik arayışı olan Paul 'a babasının anlayış göstermesi gerekmektedir. The Farm oyununda ailesiyle iyi ilişkileri olmayan çiftçi Slattery çok mutsuzdur çünkü yetişkin üç kızı ve tek oğlu eğitim görmelerine rağmen onun istediği biçimde yaşamlarını sürdürmemektedirler. Çağın gerisinde kaldığını bilen Slattery, yine de gerçekleri kabullenemeyip acı çekmektedir. Mother ' s Day oyununda ise, dört çocuk annesi Bayan Johnson onaltı yaşında iken ırzına geçildiği için bu saplantıdan kurtulamamakta ve geçmişte kendisini bir aristokrat zannettiğinden çocuklarına onlardan intikam alıyormuşçasına davranmaktadır. Eğitim görmeyen çocuklarda normlardan sapmışlar ve diğer insanlarla sağlıklı ilişki kuramamışlardır. Sonuç bölümünde, oyunlarda ortaya konan kişilerin daha önce belirtilen nedenler yüzünden bir ikileme girip mutsuz olmaları irdelenmekte ve ikilemden çıkmak için çözüm yolları üzerinde durulmaktadır. Storey uzlaşmaktan yana bir yazar olduğundan, insan için umut olduğunu, çünkü kişinin kendisini eğitmesiyle ve gerçeği kabullenmesiyle bunu başarabileceğini vurgulamaktadır.

IV ABSTRACT The aim of this doctoral dissertation is to study the dilemma of man as reflected in the family plays of David Storey. In Storey's point of view, the role of parents is of utmost importance for the upbringing and psychological development of an individual. Hence, the family factor has an important place in an individual's life to be happy and be satisfied with himself. Dilemma of man in Storey's plays arises from his own life experience. His relations with his family were not as satisfactory as he wished them to be. In other words, the clash between his desires and that of his parents' made him suffer and have a dilemma. Likewise, Storey's protagonists also suffer and have dilemmas. The parents' strict belief in education to attain a status in life, the conflict between generations and mothers' oppression of the children may be cited as the main reasons for the protagonists' inability to cope with life. The introductory chapter discusses the effect of his family on Storey's life and art and the relation of these on the subject matter of this dissertation. In the development part of the thesis, five family plays are dealt with separately in individual chapters in the chronological order of publication. In the first play, The Restoration of Arnold Middleton. Arnold, the historian is very unhappy because his marriage is failing and his job gives him hardly any satisfaction. To escape reality he has made himself a king in his world of fantasy. After having a mental crisis he is restored. In the second play, In Celebration the threeShaw sons Andrew, Colin and Steven are a suffering lot although they are educated and have a status in life. For their unhappiness they blame their parents but they have to accept things as they are to cope with life. In the third play, The Contractor Mr Ewbank, the owner of a big tent company is constructing the best tent of his profession for his daughter's wedding but hevertheless he is not happy. The problem with him is that his only son Paul educated at Oxford can not hold a job and wanders from one place to another. To cope with life Ewbank has to try to understand Paul who is in search of an identity. In the fourth play The Farm Mr Slattery, the farmer has uneasy family relations because his three grown-up daughters reject feminine roles and his only son tries to live on writing poetry. Slattery knows he is behind times but to cope with life he has to accept the way his children are. In the fifth play, Mother's Day Mrs Johnson, the mother of four is also suffering because she has been seduced at the age of sixteen by her husband. Since she is not satisfied with herself she acts as if she is taking revenge on her children. Hence, the children have become perverted and can not have healthy relations with other people. The concluding chapter points out that in his family plays David Storey brings out the dilemma of his characters, the reasons underlying them, the solutions of the characters to their problem and Storey's own concept of man. Since he is not a pessimistic playwright, Storey stresses that there is hope for man because he can educate himself and learn to face reality and overcome his problems.
