ABSTRACT Tercan plain which forms our field of study is in the upper Euphrates district of Eastern Anatolie. The region is surrounded by Essence (Keşiş) mountains from the west, Bağırpaşa and Serçelik mountains from tehe south and by Dumanlı and Kılıçkaya mountains from the east. The waters of Tercan Plain, which is a tectonic originated basin, are emptied" by the Karasu and its divisions-Bahkli, Karadivan, Tuzla and Kırdım Our field of study is paraleli to the administrative borders of.counties, Tercan, Çayırlı and Otlukbeli which depends on Erzincan province. This field is about 2339 square kilometer. 376 square kilometer of this field is plain, the rest 1963 square kilometer is mountainous and hilly. Among the string of depressions in Upper Euphrates District, Tercan basin which forms the one in the west has some distinctive features regarding its climate, vegetation, residence and economical activities by comparison to it surroundings. According to the results of seventeen years of observation (1953-1970) of Tercan Observatory, annual average temperature is about 8 °C. Average rain is 429 mm. per square meter. As it is generally in tectonic originated depressions and basins, Irano- Turaniyen originated steppe elements are common. But, especially on the slopes of mountains facing towards the west, there have been a group of trees consisting of quercus and juniperus trees. In the field, there are 3 towns-Tercan, Mercan, Çayırlı-, 118 villages and 86 small villages (Mezraa, Kom, Mahalle.) totally 207 places of residence. In these places, 61346 people are living, according to eencus in 1985. 30 % of this population were living in towns, 70 % of it in other places of residence. According to the result of census mentioned above, there have been 25 people per square kilometer. The most significant economical activity in Tercan plain is agriculture and animal raising. Mainly crom and lignute, there is a comparatively rich potantial of some mines. The district is considered rich regarding of its natural and touristic beauties, since it is placed on highways and railways. But present economical values have not yet, evaluated sufficiently.
