Özet
ÖZET Tezimizin konusunu, Anadolu'nun Batı Akdeniz Bölgesi'nde bulunan Bizans dönemine ait hayvan tasvirli mimari plastik eserler oluşturmaktadır. Bölge ve dönem seçimi yapılmasına karşın, çalışmamız Orta Çağ Anadolu'sunu kapsayacak biçimde hazırlanmıştır. Tezimiz doğada yaşayan hayvanlara yöneliktir. Mitolojik yaratıklar (örneğin unicorn, basilisk gibi) çalışmamız dahilinde değildir. Mimari plastik eserlerin konumuzu oluşturmasına karşın, Orta Çağ dönemine ait eserlerde geniş bir bakış açısı yakalayabilmek için eser türü ayırımı yapılmamıştır. Çalışmamız hayvan tipolojisine yönelik değildir. Hayvan figürlerinin eserler üzerinde oluşturduğu sembolik dilin grameri tezimizin ana hedefidir. Hayvan türü ve eser türü arasındaki işlev ilişkisini anlamaya çalıştık. Kültürel, ticari, diplomatik ve çevre kültürlerle olan etkileşim incelememizde yer bulmuştur. Hayvan sembolizmini etkileyen mitolojik, kültürel ve dini unsurlar göz önünde bulundurulmuştur. Orta Çağ Anadolu sanatına yönelik çalışmalar genellikle Türk dönemine ait bir süreçten başlamaktadır. Anadolu'da Orta Çağ dönemine ait, devlet ve yönetim ayırımı yapmadan, bir çalışma yapılamamıştır. Konuda bütünlük sağlamak amacıyla ve yeni çalışmalara sağlam bir zemin oluşturması açısından tezimizin bir başlangıç olmasını ümit ediyoruz.

Ill SUMMARY Subject matter of our thesis is architectural sculpture works containing animal figures of Byzantine period located in Western Mediterranean Region of Anatolia. Although we chose a certain region and era, we prepared our thesis to cover Anatolia of Middle Ages. Our thesis is oriented towards the living animals of the nature. Mythological creatures (for example, unicorn, basilisk etc.) are not contained in our study. Although architectural sculptures are subject matter of our thesis, no distinction is made between the types of the artworks to gain a point of view of the artworks of Middle Ages. Our study is not intended for animal typology. Grammar of the symbolic language constituted by the animal figures on the artworks, is the main purpose of our thesis. We tried to understand the relationship between the animal type and artwork type. Cultural, commercial, diplomatic relationships and interaction with neighboring cultures are contained in our study. Mythological, cultural and religious elements influencing on the animal symbolism are taken into consideration. The studies oriented towards the Anatolian art of Middle Ages, generally starts from the process of the Turkish reign. A study could not be performed without making a distinction between the state and rulers of Middle Ages in Anatolia. For the purpose of ensuring integrity in the subject matter and creating a sound basis for new studies, we hope our thesis constitutes a starting point.
