SUMMARY Stereoscopy is a technique used in the viewing of images in 3D. The first stereoscopic images were drawings. Charles Wheatstone made a viewing apparatus using mirrors to see the field of depth. Although this technique was imvented before the advent of photography, it began to be used in conjunction with it and was therefore much more successful than the earlier drawings. Stereoscopic photography became widespread in Europe due to the interest of Queen Victoria of England. Stereograms were most produced and sold in France and England and were used by people of all social classes as a means of entertainment For the first time in history people were able to see places and things of which they would never have had the opportunity to see. A short time after its emergence a million stereograms had been sold and the slogan“no home with out a stereoscope”was used by the London Stereoscopy Company in advertisements. More than five hundred thousand stereoscopes were sold in Europe during the first few years. The golden age of stereoscopy lasted from this point until the beginning of the twentieth century. During this period many great technical advances were made and hundreds of cameras were designed. After the first film had been shown by the Lumiere brothers in France, 1895, the technique of making films improved rapidly and the effect of movement on the image overtook that of depth. In time stereoscopic photography was forgotten and was only kept alive through various associations and clubs. At the end of the twentieth century stereoscopic techniques improved as computer technology and the internet became commonplace. Camera manufacturing companies started to produce cameras for the amatuer. Nowdays the yechnique is mainly used in the viewing of 3D folding postcards as well as in the advertising sector which uses anaglyph and autostereoscopic methods.
