Özet (Çeviri)
108 7. SUMMARY Saul Bellow is one of the most important American writers of post-war period. He refuses all sorts of ethnic labellings and classifications and insists that despite his Jewish background he always felt as an American and his concerns are of modern man. His characters may have similarities to traditional Jewish types but are basically modern, alienated, depressed individuals. His fiction provides a rich material both for the critics and the readers. He is particularly interested in certain concepts such as alienation, civilization, history, science and culture. In this study I attempted to examine three concepts in his novels: alienation in Dangling man, history or past in Herzog and civilization in Henderson the Rain King. In fact one can easily see all these concepts treated in any of his works. However these three novels give priority to certain concepts without excluding the others. Alienation in Dangling Man is the natural result of the modern life. Deprived of moral and spiritual guidance, modern man is alone and hopeless. He does not want to integrate into a degenerated society and share the values it imposes. However he can not remain indifferent to the problems surrounding him. He dangles for a while and in the end finds a way which is open to endless comments. In Herzog Bellow focuses on the past and the history which shapes the present. Herzog, the protagonist, is always under the pressure of past. It is both the source of his happiness and sufferings. He is trapped between the history and the present time. Henderson the Rain King depicts the follies and allusions of modern man's belief in science and technology which is called modern civilization. His experiences in Africa show that modern civilization can not solve the problems of modern individual. For a better future and civilization, man has a lot to learn from those who are simply and despising classified as primitives and wild.
